» "Why do fandoms [especially Arashi fandom] use such odd descriptions (instead of names) in their fic? "The miracle boy", really??" - And, oh, now I laughed when the first comment was, "Okay so where is the fic about the magician and the rapper getting it on because I need that in my life." But also I cannot agree with this more--JUST USE THEIR NAMES, OKAY. IT DOESN'T SOUND BORING, I PROMISE YOU. I agree that a little bit of epithet is okay, especially in a slash fic where two people are of the same gender, but also. It's not that hard to structure your sentences so it's clear who you're talking about! And names are "invisible" so I unless I read it five times in one sentence, I promise I'm not going to notice and will instead be focusing on what they're saying/doing. You use "the magician" and I'm going to be jarred right out of the narrative, otoh.
» "For all the grief it brought, [H/Hr] fandom still gave me a great few years." - I love this for being a positive Harry/Hermione secret, but also because it's how I feel about fandom. Sure, there's a lot of grief and it gets really hard being a fan of the ship sometimes, but at the end of the day, it's still worth it. (And, hey, it gives me perspective and empathy for other sane shippers in batshit fandoms and having to deal with both the negativity/being tarred with the same brush and having stupid people on your side.)

» "12 years later, I'm still pissed [Invasion America] never got a proper ending." - a) Whoa, has it been 12 years already? and b) OMG ME TOO TIMES LIKE A THOUSAND. I went through the requisite obsessive period with that series and I am forever bummed that we didn't get a proper ending for it, not even as a series of books or something. So bummed. At least I'm not the only one.
» "What's so horrible about having a female healer? It should be about the personality, not the gender!" - I was surprised by the comments, that most people agreed or else the point was that too often female healers suck. Which is close to my issue with them, but not precisely it--I don't mind female healers, I often enjoy them and you will NEVER catch me going into a fight without a dedicated healer who will save my ass time and again. But it gets tiring to have the female characters always be the healers, that they hardly got to do anything else. And that there weren't a lot of male healers for a long time, which was sadface-making.
It's a different kettle of fish to say that only an offensive (rather than defensive/healing) female is a a "strong" female, which isn't my issue with all the female healers. To make this further complicated, I'm not sure what context the OP is saying this in. Tired of fandom giving the exisiting female healers crap solely for being healers? Or are they ignoring that the trope of a female healer has become a stereotype? (Though, after awhile, the comments reflect this two-pronged problem, so I'm vaguely satisfied with the discussion. Vaguely satisfied with a discussion on fandomsecrets, what is this world coming to!)

» "I find slash of all flavors exploitive!" - I don't normally read the comments of a long thread on a secret that is probably a really obvious troll, but this was an interesting discussion of default sexuality assumptions in fandom and how, dude, it's fanfic. Calm down. No need to get upset over a bunch of fictional characters being written into makeouts with other fictional characters of the same gender. On the other hand, it is interesting discussion. Though, I dunno what people are so cranky about, I never have trouble sequestering myself away in slash or het corners of fandom when I'm in a given mood. Maybe that's just a byproduct of having so many fandoms? Do other people have trouble finding the type of pairings/fic they prefer? Is it really something to get worked up about, aside from how all fic is "exploitive" of whatever sexuality is being written about? (Also, there are macros and gifs in this thread. That's the real reason I love it. There are some beautiful ones there.)

I love Green/Blue(/whatever) and Red being Trainers you have to beat in HGSS, but... man, the lack of easily available Eevees and their evolutions is really frustrating the hell out of me. And I miss my Luxray. And the Pokemon just aren't quite as cute. And Dawn/Hikari/Platinum >>>>> ALL OF YOU. Though, I will admit that I like the more touch screen-friendly interface that HGSS has, it's kind of spoiling me for when I pick up FireRed. I do love that the comments are basically split, but most people are like, "Yeah, they're all pretty awesome, though." Which is my feeling. HGSS and DPP gave me different things--well, as much as ANY Pokemon game can give you something different from another--but I really enjoyed both so much.
» "Whenever I have to confront someone, [Red's theme from HGSS] plays in the back of my head and I know shit is about to go down." - I love how all the comments pretty much echo the same sentiment: I FUCKING LOVE RED'S THEME.     » "I think Joss Whedon proves that men just can't be feminists." - Plus the comments on the secret, which are (as expected) long and plentiful. I don't agree with the blanket statement that all men can't be feminists, but I do agree that I don't think Joss Whedon is a great example of it. One of the first comments is to this post on Firefly and I don't go to quite the same level of horror as the OP there and don't have nearly the same baggage/anger she does, I agree with some of it and the problems it brings up with Firefly. Because it's such an angry extreme analyzation of Firefly (though, a very thorough one and the poster clearly did her research), and while I can't say I agree with it, but the mocking of it on fandomsecrets? *brr* Okay, swinging back to being creeped right the fuck out by a lot of these people. However? Worth it for the comment on Whedon's "well-intentioned but extremely flawed feminism" that says: he's trying so hard, like a turtle running into a screen door but pushing on so determinedly and there's a cat inside watching him angrily because he's doing it wrong. the cat is feminism Lolling pretty much forever. (The later comments on the secret itself are much more reasonable and remind me, oh, thank christ, I don't have to carpetbomb all of fandom and start from scratch.)
» "I liked [Takumi from NANA] better than Nobu and I don't think he's a bad person. Try expressing that in NANA fandom." - IT WAS LIKE I WROTE THIS SECRET IN MY SLEEP. ;___; Reading through the comments on the secret, there's more support for this opinion than I thought there would be. I especially liked the point about how Takumi sees Hachi for who she really is and it's not necessarily a perfect match, but at least it's something real. But, man, every time the topic of Takumi comes up, I just want to rage about how he's a 23 year old dude who's basically had to be the only one with his shit together in that band of his (because, seriously, YOU try dealing with Reira and Ren's total fucked up personalities and trying to keep their shit together along with your own at twenty-three), even if that doesn't excuse that, yeah, sometimes he's a total bastard. Not to mention, he actually gets Hachi to grow up in a lot of ways that other characters wouldn't. And Aizawa doesn't flinch away from the darker sides of Takumi, they're absolutely intended, and I think that makes him one of the most interesting characters in the manga. And the rest of the haters can Suck It/Exit Stage Left. :|
» "FINALLY OMG! [discovers het_reccers]" - I am really glad to see more people discovering the comm, especially since it's (as the secret says) so well organized and active. I've been watching it for a few weeks now and it really is all kinds of fabulous.

» "If you post a link to FFNET, I automatically assume it's juvenile and crappy writing!" - The comments do have a lot of, "yeah, no, it's not that bad" in them and one of the best points is about small fandoms that don't get much traffic elsewhere. I've been talking about this recently (given my Sailor Moon and Kyou Kara Maou! reading habits) and I've started to come down on FFNET's side. It's not actually that hard to find readable fic there anymore. You have communities and author's pages with favorites that all function as hundreds of recs for any decent sized fandom, you can get an idea of how popular a fic is by the number of reviews (which isn't always reliable, but neither is LJ/DW's comment count) and it's actually pretty easy to slide right over a fic that has a crap summary, just as easy as doing the same exact thing on LJ. But, best of all, FFNET is actually really comfortable for me to read, in a way that AO3 isn't.
» "I wish we could combine the nice things about all three ships to make one super ship [in Glee fandom]" - I don't necessarily agree with all of the OP's takes (but, well, I wouldn't, would I?     » glee spoiler? if so, it's very vague, idk - I am currently three eps behind, but I wrote this awhile back, so it may be out of date ) Also, I'm getting really sick of Glee bouncing all over the goddamned map when it comes to anything. It's interesting because you don't see male characters get that kind of casual bashing that often (thus making it harder for me to get all frothy about it) and yet... Squall is one of those characters that I genuinely liked. I thought his antisocial (beyond what even he wanted himself to be) was the point of his character? And that's why he connected so strongly with Rinoa after the initial clash? Because she was someone who could get him to open up, someone that he could genuinely open up to. And I'm just going, WAIT, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DON'T USE HOPE IN THEIR PARTY?? Or that they think his AI sucks? Because omg Hope is awesome for me! He never leaves my party if I can help it because he's a fantastic healer and a strong Ravager and he's getting to be a pretty good Synergist for me. And he doesn't die that often for me? As long as I've got him on healing duty, my characters almost hardly ever die and he's about on par health-wise with the rest of my party, so he can withstand a fair amount of attacks? Which isn't about how Eiri and Shuuichi have this great, sweet, perfect, epic love, but more that it was about how it was actually one of the better portrayals of someone with depression and the aftermath of gang rape that I've seen. Saying "I love you" or giving him hugs or even proving that Shuuichi would stay through all his crap didn't make it all better, in fact it kind of made it worse because it forced Eiri out of the emotional walls he'd built around himself and brought up all these god-awful memories. Eiri was deeply and truly fucked up and he was getting slowly better, but it wasn't easy and I appreciated a series that showed that. And I appreciated that they (imo) kinda showed that Shuuichi wasn't really all better by the end, either, just that he was holding on for Yuki's sake, because Yuki couldn't handle him having a melt down and I'm pretty sure Shuuichi's going to have a major meltdown in the future, but right now he's holding himself together with duct tape and determination and asdl;fkjaslkj they were so deliciously fucked up and yet sort of good for each other and genuinely loved each other even amongst all the crap. THAT IS WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT. Blah, blah, blah, /ridiculous gravitation fan.

But how can I complain when it gets me porn?" - After being in One Piece fandom for awhile, it is like I wrote this secret in my sleep. I absolutely love shipping, I'm drawn to it no matter how hard I may (or may not) try to stay away. I think fandom is wonderful for giving us so much porn! I want more of it! But I also feel restless sometimes because there's not the same kind of in-depth discussion of the plot going on and interesting shit is going down, aside from just pairings! I'm torn.
Most people seem to agree, but I did like this comment about why that commentor seeks out ship fic when going to fandom. Which I also find a lot of truth in. But I do wish there were at least more discussion of plotful things.
» "I didn't ship Shizuo and Izaya until I saw this genderbending pic, but now I almost do! Except Shizuo deserves better." - Aside from the genderbending aspect, I'm actually finding the whole "deserves better" thing kind of interesting in DRRR!! fandom. Setting aside how I don't really ship based on one person "deserving" another, I say this as someone who like Shizuo best: I bet he's not exactly easy to live with, either. Does he "deserve" better? Maybe. But if he is going to get so wrapped up in Izaya every time the obnoxious brat comes around, practically to the exclusion of everything else around him, well.         Please cut that PreCure shit out, because I cannot take another VOCALOID or Durarara!! fandom on top of all the others I have going on. Why are you doing this to me?

Depends on if you're as all over the map as I am today, I guess. Or if you're not into Sailor Moon or One Piece or Bleach or Durarara!! as much as I am. I AM SORRY, BUT I STILL LOVE THESE FANDOMS, OKAY.)
→ YET ANOTHER POST that was too large the first time I tried to post and I AM GETTING TIRED OF THIS. UP YOUR POSTING LIMIT, LJ. D:<
