- Final Fantasy VII - Here Today by Icor - This fic was a lovely look at the very beginning of FFVII, as Cloud falls through the rafters of Aerith's church and what must have been going through her head at the time. I loved the fic because it dealt with the parallels between Cloud and Zack that she felt through the early parts of the game, what kind of effect that must have had on her, how hard it must have been for her, with the life she led and Zack having been gone for so long. A lot of details are really nicely done here, it's very interesting characterization-wise for Aerith, and has very pretty writing. And there's not nearly enough Zack/Aerith fic in the world. *sulk* (Zack/Aerith.)
- Final Fantasy XII - White Wine, Black Nectar by Icor - I haven't been reading much FFXII fic lately because I've been more interested in replaying the game for the mechanics of the game, rather than the story, but I've been poking at fic again, saw a couple of Balthier/Fran recs (which I still pine for more of) and figured, what the hell, I'll at least try one out. This fic reminds me of why I liked the characters in the game so much, this really beautiful combination of the language of the game (which isn't so overdone that the author is trying too hard, yet feels at home with the style I remember from the game) and the use of game elements like Haste and Berserk and Bacchus' Wine (which is something I love when fics do) and their effects on a character like Fran, the gorgeous characterization all around, all of it makes me want to run back to my game and play it again. It reminds me just how much I love these two characters, especially when they're partners even though they're a Hume and a Viera. Plus, you add in the lovely sensuality that doesn't take away from the trust and otherness of both of them... well, this is one of my new favorite fics, shush. ♥ (Balthier/Fran.)
- Final Fantasy XII - Aftermath by Icor - [Note: This fic will contain spoilers for the end of the game.] Another Balthier/Fran fic that does exactly what I want from fic about them--keeps their sense of partnership while still letting them be together, winding it all around a sense of high skies adventure and flirting and sky pirates and their lives are never going to be about ordinary things like settling down, at least certainly not right at this moment, and that language that fits the original game. It's a quiet moment after they've escaped the Bahamut and are wondering What next?, which makes it all the more lovely a piece after the climax of the game's story. (Balthier/Fran.)
- Final Fantasy XII - Venus by Icor - ....I do appear to be going through the author's entire stash of fics, but you have to understand that it's good Balthier/Fran and I weep for the lack of it in fandom most of the time. So I'm pouncing on everything I can here. And this fic is no exception, it's got the same lovely way with words and images, it has the same tone as the game, it has the same lovely characterization for both of them, this time with porn! Good het porn, too! That's even rarer than good Balthier/Fran, I suspect. The way Balthier's nervousness and desire come through in this piece (because this is Fran and this is new), while he's still so Balthier is lovely, the way Fran is so... all the things that make Fran Fran. The smut is lovely, the characterization is lovely, I am happy with fandom once again. (Balthier/Fran, somewhere around NC-17 rating for this fic.)
- Gundam Wing - Forgiven by Jan - One of the few complaints I have about GundamW is the way Treize's story ended, even as powerful as it was and how much I agree that it probably had to happen that way. So I like fic like this, the kind that goes AU after the ending, that gives me the Treize/Zechs ending I wanted post-series. I like the way it's set up, the way it's not about setting up this huge, detailed post-series situation that lets Treize live, instead the details are vague and unimportant, allowing the fic to focus on the emotional impact of Treize standing on Zech's doorstep, which makes it work that much better. Zechs' reaction to seeing him again, the returning intimacy, the thoughts that run through Zechs' head, the regrets he has, all of it made me feel that much better about the GundamW ending. (Treize/Zechs.)
- Hana Yori Dango - water vs herbicide by swollenfoot - There's something about the tone of this fic that I really liked somehow, the way it's not exactly bitter or angsty, it's even a happy moment for Tsukushi, but it still says so much about how difficult everything in her life was. Even as she stands outside in the rain, not unhappy on her birthday, maybe more than a little drunk, Tsukasa calling on the phone inside, the tone of this is... just right. I loved the use of the theme for this one, the way Tsukushi's thoughts sounded during the piece. (Some Tsukasa/Tsukushi.)
- LOVELESS/xxxHOLiC - The Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings by allira_dream - There are certain crossovers (usually that involve xxxHOLiC, the crossover champion) that I know will be fantastic almost before I read them and a crossover between LOVELESS and xxxHOLiC promised to be fantastic indeed. Which is was, the two series blending together so well, the way they somehow work despite obviously taking place in different worlds (what with the cat ears and all), the way the tone of both series came together so well. Ritsuka wandering into Yuuko's shop, the choice he's offered, the decision he makes, Yuuko's reaction to it, all of it is this really lovely understated quality that just works. ♥ (No real warnings/pairings.)
- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Only More Stupid by mellish - You know, the longer I'm a fan of the Host Club manga, the more I'm not sure I even need pairings so much as I just need interaction between my favorites. Kyouya and Tamaki's relationship, whether platonic or something more, fascinates me because it's so much more complicated than it seems at first glance, the way it starts out as genuine annoyance and somewhere along the way, Tamaki manages to become honestly important to Kyouya, which this fic captures so well. It has a great Tamaki in it, such a vibrant character, someone who acts like an idiot, but isn't actually, the way he comes across in the text just as fantastic as in the series. And slowly, slowly, somehow Kyouya begins to care about Tamaki and you can feel it throughout the piece and just... oh, crap, I might as well just flail and get it over with it, because that's what this fic makes me want to do. It hits that dynamic with them that I love and it's genuinely a good story. *___* (This is intended as gen, but Kyouya/Tamaki fans might find it interesting as well.)
- Shaman King - the seer by thornsmoke - Oh, wow, this is a fantastic Hao piece, set pre-series and it's just... this really great blend of creepy and beautiful, in a way that's very like Hao's character. The details, the use of feathers and fire and water, are all really lovely, the fortune teller's prophesy saying so much, especially knowing the direction of the series, yet still so vague that it, too, is lovely to read. I love the sense of spiritualism in this fic, I love that it fits together with what I know of the series, it matches the tone of Hao's character. It's really lovely writing as well and, okay, this rec sucks, but this really was a fantastic fic. ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)
- Ugly Betty - last beautiful girl (in the world) by Mardia - For all that I do sometimes ship Daniel/Betty, there are just as many times when I don't think I really want the show to ever go there because their relationship is something else. This fic does a beautiful job of capturing that something else dynamic, the way they trust each other, the way they even love each other despite it not being about romance, the way Daniel grows as a person because of Betty, the way it's such an understated relationship, but all the more powerful for that. The way he slowly comes to realize that he wants to spend more time with her, the way it just sort of happens somehow, and it's shown wonderfully here. I adored this fic. (This is gen, but Daniel/Betty fans may be interested.)
- Ugly Betty - Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Valentine's Day, a Fantastic Fourth, and a Rockin' Cinco de Mayo, Betty Suarez! by krabapple - I am so completely shooting myself in the foot by reading all this Ugly Betty fic so fast, especially when so much of it is Daniel/Betty-friendly and the show itself isn't going to go there any time soon (I don't think...?), but... I can't help it! It's such fun fic and has great voices for the characters and I giggled out loud at several points during this fic, the various holiday celebrations that show off Daniel and Betty's relationship (sometimes romantic, sometimes it could be that non-romantic thing they have), all these great little scenes that could go together or stand on their own. I love that the characters just shine in these scenes, I love that it has the same quirky humor that the original series had, the way I can just see all of them like this. ♥ (Daniel/Betty.)
- Ugly Betty - A year in the life (or, seven times Betty and Daniel showed each other they cared) by gardinha - Another fic that could be something more than platonic or it could be just gen, either way it's somehow so very Betty and Daniel, that relationship they have that seems so strange on the surface but somehow is completely natural for them. I liked that it was woven together with a lot of the moments from the show itself, building on those to show the evolving relationship between the two of them, showing how those moments built into something more. Very nice. (This is gen, but Daniel/Betty fans my enjoy it as well.)
