[ FFVIII, REBORN!, STXI, T:TSCC, VOCALOID ]

SHARING TIME:
Why, hello there, Skip Beat! fanfic primer that looks totally awesome! :D :D :D :D (Link via [livejournal.com profile] anenko, of course.)
AND ONTO THE RECS:
Star Trek XI - 2 Fanfics
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - 2 Fanfics
Final Fantasy VIII - 1 Fanvid
Star Trek XI - 1 Fanvid
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - 1 Doujinshi
    VOCALOID - 4 Fanart
2009 GOAL: 697 (+ 195)/1700

Star Trek XI: When I Was Invincible by robanybody - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Oh, my, how could I resist this fic? Kirk is accidentally teleported into Spock Prime's universe and antics are had. Of course I was going to read it! And it was delightfully fun, seeing the XI version of Kirk interacting with the original series characters, how they're similar, but you can really feel the differences, and it's just. It's so hilarious and I love the sense of... even the ship is familiar but not quite the same to Kirk. I love that the fic covered pretty much all of the main characters and Kirk's interaction with them, I love that it just sailed right along, and asl;dkfjaslkj oh man. TOS Spock and XI Kirk interaction. It was so grand. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: tushah nash-veh k'du by medie - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] This is a short piece set from Gaila's point of view, which I continue to be surprised by (the amount of Gaila fics in the fandom that are actually really interesting to read, that is) and it doesn't have to be long to get it's point across. It's just a moment of two people from different species, an Orion girl in Starfleet and a Vulcan in Starfleet, waiting to be rescued and trying to cope with the loss of Vulcan. Poignant and bittersweet, very nicely done. (No warnings/pairings.)

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Never Said by halcyon_shift - [Note: This is the third fic in a series and both the fic and this rec will contain spoilers for the second season/series finale.] This is the next fic in the line of this universe and it's... maybe it was just the mood I was in today, but something about this fic hit really hard, in just the way it was supposed to do. John's life is so hard where he's at now, especially with bits and pieces fraying all around him and there's no one to really talk to. The author does a masterful job of using the other characters in the universe, the tapes from Sarah, the visit from Martin Bedell, the use of Allison here, all of it contributes to the mood of this piece, which is kind of super painful, but brilliantly done. I just... there's something about this fic series that's really caught me, that fits perfectly with my view of this universe. I love it. (No warnings/pairings.)

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Widows of the Ashes by halcyon_shift - [Note: This is the fourth fic in a series and both the fic and this rec will contain spoilers for the second season/series finale.] This time, the focus changes to Sarah and Savannah back in present day and... I'll grant that they're not what I was hoping to read about, because the author's John has so captured my attention, but I also really wasn't bored while reading this. The author writes them just as brilliantly as she does everything else, the painful moments that are always there without being too over the top, the distance between the characters, Sarah trying to connect with Savannah and it's so hard on both of them. The use of Jesse was also brilliant here, I love that it fits so well with what TSCC was all about--tough women in this war against the machines, it picked up on all the themes that the show had going for it. I loved this one, too. (No warnings/pairings.)

Final Fantasy VIII Fanvid: Final Fantasy VIII Review - [Note: This is only the first part of the review, but it's pretty easy to hunt down all 11 parts to this. You may have to hit up the guy's website to finish them off, but it shouldn't be hard.] I picked this link up from a secret posted on fandomsecrets and, okay, technically, this isn't a fanvid, it's a game review, but I'm at a loss for how else to label it. It's not really a livejournal post, it's not really anything else... so, fanvid it is. What this video did for me was pull me out of one of those nights where nothing seemed to quite be going right and got me to laugh many, many times. It's eleven parts, each ranging from 9 to 25 minutes apiece and I watched the whole thing practically in one sitting, that's how addicted I was to the review.

Now, granted. The review is all about pointing out the many, many ways that FFVIII sucked and I have to admit that there are a lot of really good points about why the gameplay was so ridiculous and why the writing was really fucking lazy in parts. I love the game still, I adore the characters and I actually like the story and it's one of my favorite games/fandoms. And yet there was not a single part of this review that didn't get at least two IRL LOLs out of me. It might not be for all fans of the game, but if you have a strong sense of mocking the silly parts of something you love, I think this was a really hilarious review.

Star Trek XI Fanvid: ... on the dance floor - [Note: Go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the video and this rec.] There is something about STXI that attracts me to videos like this, I don't think I've hardly watched any serious, straight up fanvids, I'm always going for the lollarious stuff. And this one is indeed hilarious. The Flight of the Conchords song is a great one to set this about not enough women/an overabundance of men in the movie, making a point without losing the humor. The clip choice is hilarious and somehow just fits with the song and just. asl;dkjfa;lskjal basically it's the latest most awesome thing ever.

Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) - Blood Bond 0.5 - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be freely joinable.] Okay. This was only 13 pages total and it was really a filler thing, rather than advancing the plot forward and you do kind of need have read the previous book in the series to get what's going on here and even then it's really vague and dreamy. But. Well. It's Ciel and her art is gorgeous and this book is no exception--her Dino is beautifully done. I wish there'd been a few more pages to this, a little more detail in the panels, but I'll forgive it because she's creating a mood here and because those close-ups of Dino were hot. :D (Dino/Hibari.)

- VOCALOID - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Holy crap, it did not take long for me to fall in love with this site. Right from the beginning, the lines were sleek and cute, the colors just beautiful and vibrant, and just a hint of a softened quality on the images. A recipe just about guaranteed to make me fall in love. As the artist goes along, she gets more and more detail worked into the images and the art gets better and better. Okay, see, I never meant to get started with Vocaloid fandom, hell, it's not like they have any personalities or anything to get attached to. It's just... this site kind of represents everything that made me cave anyway--the art is so much goddamned fun that I can't help it. This was a great first site for me to visit properly, especially with all the pretty Gakupoid and the adorable as all get out Len and Rin art. ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)

- VOCALOID - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I was wondering how long it would take me before I ran into Len/Rin art, I knew it would happen eventually. XD And, while I do wish there were more art here, since there's only a little more than a handful of images, it's kind of hard to complain when it's such pretty stuff yet again. It's all sleek lines and glossy colors and really nice detail put into each of the images, the kind of art that really sort of forcibly reminds me why I started looking for proper art sites for them. While it's just a first stop for me (or one of them, anyway), it was a solid one I'm glad to have seen. (Len/Rin.)

- VOCALOID - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - There's not as much art here as I'd like (I've been having trouble really getting into the corner of j-fanart sites for this fandom so far) but about halfway through what is here starts getting really cute and has really smooth, clean lines. The colors are also those bright and vivid ones that work so well with me for this series, especially the teals of Miku's hair, eyes, and clothes. Toss in a few cute ones of Rin and Len and it was a solid, fun little site this afternoon. (No warnings/pairings.)

- VOCALOID - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - This site takes a bit to get going, but it was kinda neat to see the way the artist steadily progresses with just about every consecutive image that I went through, every one was a little better than the last until the artist was doing some really pretty art. I think the Miku illustrations were my favorites, but the artist also did some nice work with Rin and Len as well. It was a really fun site, a decent size for my travels so far, and netted me some shiny things to look at. I can't ask for more than that. XD (No real warnings, I wouldn't say?)

Kirk is accidentally teleported into Spock Prime's universe and antics are had.

oh god, i am so tempted to read that. even if i have kept my oath of not awknowledging the new movie by reading any fic (with the exception of [livejournal.com profile] pogrebin's Spock/Uhura piece (http://pogrebin.livejournal.com/72037.html#cutid1)) but hell, shit like this i am always willing to read. damn your recs.

Dino/Hibari doujin yessss. there's so much out there in this fandom that i mainly follow recs these days, rather than venture alone into the unknown.

I have very firmly put the STXI movie into the category of "fun, but not particularly deep fanfic by the producers" and enjoy reading fanfic based off fanfic. They're never my Trek, but as derivatives go... it's a lot of fun. (Or maybe I'm just trying to find a way to justify it so that you can fall down here with me. Joooooooin meeeee. The flames of your rage will keep you toasty warm at night! :D :D :D)

I haven't read D18 fic in awhile since I don't recognize most of the authors lately and I'm so very lazy, but doujinshi. I WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF IT. (Thank god I'm a fan of D18, though, otherwise it'd be EVERYWHERE and I'd want to punch everyone in the face. XD)

it's a good aproach, i guess. my mind is stuck in the "not canon, not canon, not canon" gut reaction whenever i see something about the movie. alternatively i am always thinking "thank god they didn't mess with TNG". but yeah, i guess i should be more open to fic.

i've been reading a lot of D18 fic these days but it's mainly old stuff that i had saved from time ago to "read later" so i have no idea what's going on in fandom these days.

Thank god I'm a fan of D18, though, otherwise it'd be EVERYWHERE and I'd want to punch everyone in the face.

it's SO WEIRD that i like this pairing (except that is totally my kind of dynamic) because you know i normally hate the big popular ships and i cringe in disgust any time somebody mentions things like "Arthur/Merlin", "Harry/Draco", "Tezuka/Fuji". i think the only other time in my life i've shipped the fannish thing to ship is with Stargate Atlantis. so yes, for once i am very glad to be able to choose between two million fics of D18.

At the same time, I probably shouldn't encourage too much. If you're happier not reading fic, if it would only piss you off, I guess the sensible thing to do would be to avoid them. *scuffs toe in the dirt*

Fandom actually seems a lot quieter to me these days or else I'm just not seeing where people are posting their fic on LJ anymore. (I don't bother with FFNET. There might be some good stuff there, but I'm not desperate yet.)

I'm half and half--half of the time I go with the wildly popular ship (though, I'm cooling on Arthur/Merlin and now I really want Arthur/Morgana and, holy shit, it is hard being a fan of them in this fandom), the other half of the time, I'm with the obscure pairing. How much easier my life would be if I could just ship all popular stuff all the time, sigh.

considering i'm a person with zero capacity for denial-of-canon (i can't understand how some people goes "oh, just pretend the last two seasons of *such and such show* didn't happen") and i am constantly getting affected by the weirdest things in fandom i am very cautious about what i read. but i think i am past the peak of my RAGE RAGE RAGE!!! phase with the new Star Trek movie so maybe i can start enjoying some badass fic.

it's funny cause since the PoT fandom practially died and i dropped Bleach and Naruto i feel like i've been completely out of loop with the manga/anime fandom (not that i stopped watching/reading, but i guess the things i'm into now don't have such a huge fandom) and reading Reborn made feel a bit more connected to all that and it felt good since Reborn seemed to be the next big fandom and many amazing authors seemed to be into it. but now i think Reborn is slowly drying up and i wonder if there could ever be a huge fandom like the good old days when people was writing FUCKING MASTERPIECES in the PoT/Naruto/Bleach fandom every day. i get nostalgic about fandom, how pathetic.

Merlin is a hard fandom to be in if you don't like Arthur/Merlin, like me. my favoured ship is Uther/Morgana and there's not so much of that, and i still haven't found the fic that clicks it for me (normally in each fandom there's one particular fic that basically represents why i love a particular pairing, everything i wanted and didn't even know it - i call them CLICKing fics) and i am too lazy to write it, because unlike many pairings this is a ship i feel i can write my own CLICK MOMENT fic for. and well, if you think finding Arthur/Morgana is hard, try being a fan of Merlin/Nimueh or Morgana/Nimueh like myself. *sigh*

[identity profile] tomomichi.livejournal.com 2009-08-09 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
It does seem like the epic manga/anime fandoms are a bit of a dying breed and I think it really started with Bleach, because there just never really seemed to be a huge explosion of long plotfic from the fandom, it was all these smaller fics focused on pairings or character exploration, but not anything with plot. (Well, not that Tenipuri did, either, but.)

I think that was probably about the time that fandom shifted away from FFNET and more towards Livejournal, though, which doesn't really lend itself to longer fic, everything moves way too fast on LJ for people to have the attention span, though. And it's hard to go back to FFNET, as much as I want those epic fandoms again, because so much of the fic is so terrible.

REBORN! does feel like it's slowing down and I think a lot of that is the current arc being not so hot and everyone's sort of scattering (anime/manga fandom just isn't big enough to really weather the whole Dreamwidth thing very well) and no one really seems to have much energy anymore. I do miss the days of those Tenipuri masterpieces, I don't know where the authors like that have gone.

It's hard being in a fandom if you're an Arthur/Merlin fan like I am, too--I like them, but so LITTLE of the fic clicks with me these days, so I see all this fic and yet none of it is meeting my standards and it really burns a person out. I feel the same way with pairing fic for Star Trek--I almost like it! Except not the way fandom is writing it! AUGH. But I'll definitely give you that it's much harder being into Merlin/Nimueh or Morgana/Nimueh, ouch. :/

I have to admit that i do prefer the kind of style LJ favours. i've never been much of a fan long/plotty fics but rather enjoy pieces that are about mood, characterization, relationships or little moments that go unrecorded.

ff.net is so full of fail that i have little patience for it. unfortunately as my drug of choice lately is Detective Conan ff.net is sort of unavoidable. grrr.

god, isn't it so much more horrible, when there's tons of fic of the pairing you like but NO ONE GETS IT RIGHT. i feel that way about the Fullmetal Alchemist fandom and Roy/Hawkeye. Or you know, 98% of Remus/Sirius.

there seems to be a bit more Merlin/Morgana (which I like a lot, in any variety, shippy or just gen interaction, i just want Merlin and Morgana interacting) but god, Merlin/Nimueh and Morgana/Nimueh... I AM EVER SO FRUSTRATED.

[identity profile] tomomichi.livejournal.com 2009-08-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer LJ styled fics as well and I can put up with a lot more from a fic if it's short. But if you're going to try to sell me on something longer, you better get it really, really spot on or else I just don't have the patience for it anymore.

Ugh, I feel you. I'm currently really in love with The Batman, which has NO presence on LJ as far as I can tell, so I'm forced to go to FFNET and... ugh, even there, I have to skip about 98% of everything because if you can't write a decent summary, I am not interested.

I like Merlin/Morgana, but it's tough to sell me on it because neither of them are my favorite and it gets really old REALLY quickly. I'm actually hoping for interaction between them in the upcoming season more than anything.
