Notes: *roffles* Okay, Bleach anime, you totally win this round. ♥
Also, I have seen the previews for Hanakimi 13 and OMG I AM SO SCARED SOMEONE PLEASE HOLD ME. ;__; AKIHA SO SCARY.
Oh, and I'm going to stop putting spoiler space around the FFXII fics. I'll still include warnings for endgame spoilers as much as I can, but I figure by this point you've either finished the game/spoiled yourself or you're adept enough at avoiding spoilers.

- Final Fantasy VII - How It Goes by savage_midnight - What I wound up liking most about this fic--setting aside the whole aspect of Cloud/Tifa fic I liked that has porn in it omg yay--is that it felt very much like it fit together with Advent Children, the style of the movie that's somehow different from the game (or what I know of it) that I can't quite articulate. I'm sure a lot of this comes from, as the author admits, that she's more familiar with the movie, but it's something I really wound up liking, it makes the post-AC setting work that much better. And it's... there's a lot of sadness here, but a lot of hope, a lot of having put many demons to rest. Not all of them, there's still traces of being haunted to Cloud, but something's been put right again and the way Tifa looks at him... this is the kind of Cloud/Tifa fic I really enjoy, the kind I wanted after having watched the movie. They're my bittersweet but happy/functional pairing love. ♥ (Cloud/Tifa, some R-ish level content.)
- Final Fantasy VII - Mockingbird by Gerald Tarrant - This is a beautiful Marlene story, tapping into the potential of the character and breathing such life into her here, she just... shines in the narrative. The writing is lovely, clean and easy to read, the kind that smoothly rolls right along, but it's also... the way she looks at the world, the little details that make up her life, with Cloud and Tifa and Denzel at the Seventh Heaven and it's... that age where she's still so young, but she's coming to understand things more and more and the writing captures that beautifully as well, too. Fabulous, fabulous fic. (No warnings/pairings.)
- Final Fantasy XII - Still a Kiss by canis_m - [Note: There are spoilers for the end of the game.] I would not have clicked onto or read a Basch/Larsa story from most authors, partially because the age difference kink isn't usually mind and because I OTP other pairings. However, it's canis_m and she writes lovely fic no matter what, so I had to at least give it a shot. And her characterization is lovely here, she captures both of them so well, right down to the little gestures and the turns of phrase that made me hear the characters in my head. Really gorgeous writing. (Basch/Larsa.)
- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - A Royal Pain by measuringlife - For every time I say I don't like something, along will come a fic that blows my statements out of the water. I'm not much of an AU fan, I like a series for the series that was presented. On the other hand, Akiha/Umeda fic by one of my favorite authors. And it's very, very AU, but it uses the theme of fairy tales, is utterly merciless in mocking Umeda, and yet still makes me love him all the more because he's just as merciless towards 98% of the rest of the world. What I mean is that there's fabulous characterization here and the fairy tale stuff that appeals to the fangirl in me, but done in such a way that it's delightful fun. There are these little moments woven into the storytelling that make me grin like an idiot and a satisfied, happy, content feeling at the end (as well as a demand for more, complete with stomping of my foot, yes) and that's all I ask for from AkiUme fic. ♥ ♥ ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)
- Mushishi - Remembrance by surestsmile - I picked the link for this one up from 31_days and it's a really lovely, quiet piece that gives me the same feeling the series itself did. While I'm not sure Ginko would have even these fleeting bits of memory left to him, some part of me wishes he did in a way much like this. The imagery is lovely, very evocative and pretty, it has a nice impact to it despite the short length. (No warnings/pairings.)
- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Day Seven of Twenty Eight by Corazon del Fuego - I have a thing about Kyouya/Tamaki/Haruhi and I used to wonder if there were only ever two of us on the planet. So I have an attraction towards fic that pairs the three of them up together and want to give it a chance and occasionally this nets me something I really like. There was something almost sort of sweet about this fic, a sleepy morning feel combined with Haruhi's practical nature that fit together neatly. There's an extravagance to the settings around her, so much lavishness in the place they live and the clothes she has to choose from, yet it never gets away from the straightforward quality to Haruhi's character, it was really sort of neat for that. Also, the ending was totally goo-inspiring and the Kyouya and Tamaki snuggling in the bed after she rises early totally made me go, "Awwww." ....a lot. (Kyouya/Haruhi/Tamaki.)
- Ouran Koukou Host Club - untitled x 2 by Sam Starbuck - [Note: You may have to scroll down for the two Host Club ficlets if the loading pictures move the text down.] These were two delightful little ficlets with the Host Club members, the first one a delightful cosplay bit and the second one just pure Kyouya + the others fabulousness. I really enjoy the author's take on the characters, whether it be purely on a gen level when he's capturing the batshit nature of the series while still being somehow elegant (shut up, that's totally the word I wanted, really) and just... fun. The ending lines of the second one had me grinning for the longest time afterwards as well. ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)
- Prince of Tennis - Fairytale by measuringlife - It is stories like this that a) keep me firmly in love with Tezuka/Fuji and b) convince me that measuringlife is one of the most incredible authors I know. Her Fuji is exactly as I picture him, that personality that I cannot convey in words yet somehow she does. This story takes the two of them through their first meeting to that day of the match with Ryoma in the rain to after Tezuka leaves and comes back and all of it is breathtaking, the kind of perfect characterization for both of them that leave me feeling a little tight in the fangirl chest, if I might have such an extreme reaction. The sense of time winding forward, almost gliding forward, the way Fuji is such a strange creature, yet somehow there is an internal consistency that you just can't quite see, the way he reacts to Tezuka seeing into him after that match in the rain, the way Tezuka is unmoveable and stoic without being harsh... I really can't write this rec any further because I feel like the words simply aren't there or just not good enough to describe how perfectly this story hit me. ....shut up, I'm allowed to be fangirly. >:p (Tezuka/Fuji.)
- Prince of Tennis - The Cuckoo's Child by Chrissie - I was reading TezuFuji fic earlier this morning and then Chrissie happened to post and I pretty much zoomed right over to this story and I was so completely not disappointed by it. She has a way of being subtle yet still getting her point across that works brilliantly for characters like the Fuji family--the implications of just whom Fuji was with (which are not the point of the story, not really) are perfectly clear while never mentioning any names. The prose of the story is just so rock-solid and clear to read that it's the kind of fic I just get engrossed in, not letting up until I've finished the entire thing. And and and! Characterization here is gorgeous--her Yuuta is fantastic, the little details woven into his perspective (the birds! the fabulous, fabulous use of birds as metaphors and then the beautiful imagery to accompany them) show how different he is from his siblings, yet how connected he is to them at the same time. It's not a particularly light story, there are parts of the story that are difficult to read, but I loved the fic all the more for it, because these characters' lives aren't always smooth or easy, yet they're not tragic, either. And, oh, the whimiscal, obfuscating personality of Fuji Syuusuke just shines in this fic, as does Yumiko and Yuuta and just... everything. Everything about this is fabulous. ♥ (Some Tezuka/Fuji implied, but it's emphatically not really the point, this is a story about the Fuji family.)
- Prince of Tennis - Why It's Good to Have a Manager by Silver Wind - One of the things I miss about the Tenipuri fandom (well, I say "miss", when it was never really that common in the first place) is taking two characters who've never met and put them in a gen scene together. That's what I love about this fic, the way it's so adorable and so Kaidoh and Mizuki in the way they interact and yet... I could believe this. Cute and clever and fun and, dammit, she's making me like the Tenipuri fandom again! *whaps Silver Wind* D:< (No warnings/pairings.)
- Princess Tutu - The Heart's Garden by gaisce - Like the author's previous Tutu fic (the crossover with Utena), there is a quality much like a fairy tale or some surreal dream to the writing of this piece that makes it perfect for a series like Princess Tutu. I love that it shows what Rue goes through, shows what makes me love her character so, so much more than I ever thought I would at the beginning of the series, shows all the heartbreak and loneliness she went through while not over-sympathizing with her character. The way she wishes so desperately for Mytho, the way he never says what she wants to hear, the way the story ends on a painful (for Rue) note, it's just... it's quietly breathtaking and gorgeous. I love Tutu fic like this. *__* (Mytho/Rue.)
- Princess Tutu - The Night Winter Ends by X-parrot - There is something about post-series Tutu fic (which means SPOILERS if you've managed to avoid the ending even now) that I desperately crave, despite thinking the ending was as it should be. Because a writer can make nearly anything happen and why wouldn't he and yet it could so easily be such a bad fic with that concept, but this... this was perfect. So much grace in the images and descriptions, so much emotion woven into every little gesture they made, such a beautifully written background scenery, all of it fitting with the series. It's one of those stories that makes me feel like... well, it's not that I'll never seek out Tutu fic again, because I obviously will. But there's still a sense of satisfaction that I get from stories like this, one that keep the feeling of Princess Tutu yet still give me what I want in a beautiful, beautiful way. Okay. I'm done gushing now. (Fakia/Ahiru.)
- Saiunkoku Monogatari - Pollen for Dreams by Branch - I was always sort of wary of the idea of Seiran/Ryuuki fic because I liked the potential of the pairing, I liked all the unsaid and lingering feelings that they couldn't deal with, but I didn't know if it would translate into being able to read fic for it. So, that Branch's fic was the first I read for them was probably a good thing because she walks that line so very well, the things that hang in the air between them, that they both know, that neither could ignore, but can't do anything about, either. You could almost read this as entirely gen, which is another thing that I love about it and the way it fits with the characters. The use of flowers and the way they lightly touch each other, Seiran's hands on Ryuuki's shoulders, Ryuuki's head against Seiran's knee, little things like that just made me goo over this fic. (This could be gen or it could be implied Seiran/Ryuuki.)

Date: 2007-02-09 06:00 pm (UTC)But there's something terribly bittersweet about the idea of a human and a duck unable to share basic human touch that I also want fixed. And given the nature of what writers can do... it seems too perfect not to fix it a time or two in fanfic...!

Date: 2007-02-10 05:27 pm (UTC)My association with Ouran goes as far as the manga, but I do love the dynamics between Tamaki/Kyouya and Tamaki/Haruhi (this is probably the very first time I don't hate a love-by-all female character), so maybe I'll give these fics a shot when I feel more comfortable :P

Date: 2007-02-10 06:06 pm (UTC)I've actually only seen about four episodes of the anime and got so pissy with what they did to the storylines that I never bothered to go back. So I'm mostly manga-only and I think that's part of the reason I like Haruhi so much, too. (I have my OTPs of Kyouya/Tamaki and Mori/Haruhi, but when the mangaka puts in such interesting relationships between nearly all of them, it's hard not to be open to just about anything.)
Man, I have the biggest love/hate relationship with Tyrant EVER. It's such a pretty manga, despite all the rage it causes me! XD XD XD

Date: 2007-02-10 07:45 pm (UTC)I didn't even attempt to torture my eyes cos the seiyuu cast already had me going bleh. The whole manga is surprisingly pleasing to read (none of the fushigi yugi/hana yori dango tackiness thank god), and I like all the characters except for the twins. ^^;; Tamaki and Kyouya aside I think my fav boy is the Yakuza's son, he reminds me a bit of Sugiura from Yamada Taro Monogatari <- if you know this series. If you don't I HIGHLY recommend it! :D
SO many possibilities. XD
Tyrant is SO pretty I wish I had read the previous story about Tatsumi's brother!! I'm generally an angst person (my fav Takanaga story will always be the oneshot "Boku no Hatsukoi ni tsuite") this had be cracking up like crazy. The thought of Tatsumi singing Karaoke.... XDDDD
