Katekyou Hitman REBORN!: Garage Kits by botling - Perhaps I shouldn't be recommending this fic, it's very short, after all. But fandom is kind of giving me an interest in a possible Spanner and Shouichi dynamic and... well, I have to admit. There was something really amusing about this little snapshot of the two of them working together. XD XD XD (This is gen, but if you like Spanner/Shouichi, you should like this.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN!: Connection Change/Crossed Wires by glasssubway - I actually wasn't even looking for more Spanner/Shouichi fic, I just happened to stumble over it this afternoon, oddly enough. And I suspect you can tell this one is a little dated (though, probably, I myself am rather dated with the manga, given my year-end rush to meet my recs goal has been keeping me from the manga) but what I really adored about it was the look into Spanner's daily routine in life, the beautiful writing of it and the constant undercurrent of something almost sad, even when that's not precisely it, even when Spanner is still Spanner. I love how the thread of looking at everything like machinery is woven into the fic, I love that the feeling is almost sort of... numb, maybe? It's a really lovely look into Spanner's head, I thought. (Spanner/Shouichi.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN!: The Beauty of Obligation by Branch - This is an interesting look at Dino and Hibari, built around their interactions just before the fights against the Varia, taking canon and expanding it a little. What I really liked is that the antagonism at that point in time felt right, the sense of... something a little like respect, something like genuine aggrevation, something maybe in between, the way Dino wasn't fighting Hibari at full power and probably never entirely did. Which is something I feel gets lost in fandom sometimes, which is part of the reason Dino was able to catch Hibari's attention and turn him towards accepting the Vongola ring, because he was stronger than Hibari. The dynamic here is really interesting and it's a very sharp, pointed read, which I really like with these characters. (This is entirely gen, but if you like Dino/Hibari, you should like this.)
Merlin: Fire Sign by moonythestrals - You know, one of the best things about the series has been the dragon, I fucking love that dragon and I am waiting to find the fic set from the POV of the dragon, especially because you know it totally ships Arthur/Merlin, and until I find that, this is a fantastic fic that's very close to that. Merlin is having dreams and the dragon is of zero help about them and it's just. This is Merlin's life, this is what it's become. And I love the sense of humor and the flashes of dream that are really hot, the way it all winds together in something that felt very right for the show and the characters. And the writing itself is fantastic, I loved this. (Arthur/Merlin, a light R-rating.)
Merlin: If Wishes Were Horses by takadainmate - It takes a certain talent to be able to pull off drunken groping fics--or, hell, just drunken pov fics in the first place--but this one did so marvelously. I loved the balance of just about everything it achieved--drunken, wobbly Merlin without trying too hard, the balance the show itself achieves between historical speech patterns and something more modern, and, oh, man, drunken Arthur was spot on here. I'm generally not one for drunk!fics, but this one was so delightful and charming that I couldn't help falling for it, plus Arthur and his... he's so... well, of course that's how he thinks and how he tries to get a message across, instead of, you know, just being sensible and saying what he means. Also, the drunken stumble back to the castle was A+ and I'm usually not a fan of that, either, but, man, this was fun. (Arthur/Merlin.)
Merlin: the problem we all live with by green_postit - You know, I'm sort of not sure how to react to this fic. Other than to say that I think it may have been the best thing I've read in the fandom yet, the writing was gorgeous and everything it was meant to be. It's almost understated, the writing, which made it all the more powerful a read and that's in combination with the... well, everything the author put into each scene. The emotion, the dread, the fear, the happiness, the silliness, everything came across beautifully. And, oh, some of the scenes. Where Merlin and Arthur find themselves connected, where they each feel/experience what the other does, the way they react to it, it was so spot on that I didn't even have to try to imagine the whole thing. The whole tone of this fic, the interplay between the characters, the scorching hot sex, the inevitable pull of the ending, all of it was just. Gorgeous, I can rest satisfied with Merlin fandom for awhile now. (Arthur/Merlin, NC-17.)
Odin Sphere: Chasing ever afters by lurk_stiltzkin - [Note: This fic and this rec will have spoilers for the game's ending.] It's been ages since I read an Odin Sphere fic, but this one was very nice, just a simple story of Ingway, a few of the missing pieces and background details, him taking the ring to Elfaria, him meeting Mercedes long before the game started, him watching her in Titania, all the little details of the game (the wizards there! the dragon in the sewers! the psypher!) very nicely present here. The writing is smooth and clean, the fic just sailed right along for me, I loved the way these short ficlets connected together to one larger whole. And then ending with Velvet. a sdl;fkjasljk so perfect and so easy to see all of this fitting in with the game. <3 (Ingway/Mercedes.)
Prince of Tennis: tomorrow is by measuringlife - I generally don't read a lot of fics where Tezuka's arm is irrepairably broken and he has to quit tennis, even back when the Nationals stuff hadn't come out yet, back just after the Hyoutei matches, largely because I was firmly of the opinion that this was freaking Prince of Tennis. The normal rules didn't apply here. XD (Also, I was and am a ginormous Tezuka fangirl, so. You know.) But for measuringlife, I'll read just about anything, because she had this gorgeously subtle style of writing that is so perfect for Tezuka and Fuji's relationship, I love Fuji's insights (or lack thereof, sometimes) on Tezuka, how her Tezuka is so stoic but so spot on, how the language of this piece fits them so beautifully. So, for her I will read this. And marvel at how lovely it is, how on it is. And how perfect that ending is, just exactly what I wanted to read. (Tezuka/Fuji.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) - Blood Bond - This doujinshi was really kind of hard to read, both because of the smaller size and because the word bubbles were all in tone, but the art looked interesting, so I wanted to try it anyway. And I'll grant that the story is kind of WTF and maybe a little hard to follow, it feels like just a small part of a much larger story, but... oh, man, two things. First off, Dino/Hibari vampires. I have weaknesses. Second, the art is gorgeous, Ciel's work is stunning and worth reading for that alone. I actually really liked it and wanted more of it, it's one of the prettiest things I've seen in awhile and just asl;dkjfalskj so glad it's scanslated. *__* (Dino/Hibari.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) - Scempiare - a;sldfkjasl;kj god I love Peeco?'s work, she does such gorgeous drawings and this cleaning/scanslating job is really wonderfully done, it's so clean and pretty and easy to read and looks seamless. It's a fairly simple story, it's Dino's birthday and so Hibari goes to see him and about what you'd expect ensues, but I love it because it has all the hallmarks of what I love about D18--Hibari being a vicious little demon, Dino being sunny or spastic with undercurrents of seriousness, gorgeous drawings of the two of them, and porn! Also, the ending is great and as;ldkfjas;ljk did I mention how fucking pretty this thing is? Gorgeous art and solid (if doujinshi) characterization, I can't ask for more. (Dino/Hibari, NC-17.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) - Colors + Diary Exchange - [Note: Click on the links to the picture galleries or skim over the comments to find the links for these.] There are two doujinshi on this post, which I each liked for different reasons. I read Diary Exchange first (which I'm glad I did, because the art was the less pretty of the two, though, it's very solid and servicable here as well) and just ;alskdjf;alksj LOL Dino and Hibari doing exchange diaries. Hibari's characterization is a little off from what you usually get in REBORN! doujinshi, but not in a bad way, it's just a slightly different take and meant to be funny. Plus, he gets some really great panels where he looks totally hot. Colors, on the other hand, is a bit more random, it's more about feelings and their changing relationship, but the art is really fantastic (and kind of reminds me of Obata's style a little bit) and Hibari is all sharp and deadly, while Dino is gorgeous and sunny on the surface but dangerous in his own way underneath and, yeah, it's still doujinshi but asl;kdfjalskj that's the kind of doujinshi I love. *__* (Dino/Hibari.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) - Otonarisan no Shinkon Jijou - I grabbed this doujinshi because it had Byakuran/Mukuro in it and I was curious how that was going to play out, I could take or leave the Spanner/Tsuna. And, in a lot of ways, I felt like they were only there (for the most part, it did get more lolarious towards the end) to have someone for Mukuro to play off of, but... I didn't really mind much because as;ldfkjaslkjs LOL oh god this was totally on crack but so great. The art is a little simple, but with the backgrounds, it actually looks really, really nice and Byakuran is so great in this, always glomping onto Mukuro and trying to do stuff with him and generally making his "spouse"'s life kinda hell. And I feel not badly at all for Mukuro because he deserves it. It's doujin crack, so you take it with a grain of salt, of course, but Byakuran was so fabulous and I love the Byakuran/Mukuro dynamic (a;sdlkfjaslkj I was crying by the end of this) and... every time I see Byakuran in something, I think I fall in love with him more. He's just so. Fruit loops in that really fun, dangerous yet intelligent way. (Spanner/Tsuna, Byakuran/Mukuro, Mukuro/Tsuna.)
One Piece Doujinshi (scanslated) - Limited Condition - This is a really short doujinshi, not even ten pages long, but! The artist just nails the canon style, a little more detail to the backgrounds and you could very nearly mistake it for official art in some points. And a;sldfkjaslkj god I love it when doujinshika can do that. It's a simple story as well, just Zoro and Sanji out looking for ingredients being their usual selves, getting along about as well as ever, only the one moment where Zoro's forced to rest his eyes and Sanji "sneaks up" on him with a kiss that implies more, does this doujinshi really deviate from the feel of canon. Which, as much as I love the porn, is sometimes super fantastic, which is why I enjoyed this so much. *__* (Zoro/Sanji.)
Prince of Tennis Doujinshi (scanslated) - Cute - Oh, god, I love B.S CO's work. When you just look at the basic art, it's all right, really solid and looks like it'd make a decent manga, but not the super-bestest in the fandom. But what totally makes her work for me is how much I just totally LOL my way through her doujinshi, this one being no exception. I love how much she totally fucking panders with utter glee, too, like Tezuka and Fuji each have to bring their little cousins along and they're like little mini versions of Tezuka and Fuji themselves and I should be going, ugh, ew. Instead I'm going AWW SO FREAKING CUTE and LOL LOL LOL. Possibly I am easily amused when it comes to TezuFuji or this doujinshika's work. But. I really did have fun with this one and just totally dissolved into giggles at the Fujiko story. I just. as;dfkljaslkjslkj scheming!Fuji in whatever circumstances never fails to be funny. (Tezuka/Fuji.)

Date: 2008-11-30 11:01 am (UTC)I've been pretty impressed with Squeenix on this particular front--maybe not so much the dubbing (god, FFIV DS dubbing was kind of awful) but the original Japanese voices they've been chosing for their games have been pretty great lately. I LOVE the choices here so much and it needs to hurry and come out already.
