AND ONTO THE RECS:
Glee - 13 Fanfics
JE - 1 Fanfic
White Collar - 1 Fanfic
DCU - 1 Doujinshi
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - 5 Doujinshi
Glee: Your Week by diamondinsanity - [Note: There may be spoilers for 1x10 in this fic and this rec.] This fic is really kind of terrible. But it's terrible in the way the show is--as in that I laughed even when I knew I shouldn't have because that's awful to make fun of Rachel like that and yet. I couldn't help it because it was kind of true. Also, the ending was kind of hilarious, too. In a really terrible way. Which is exactly what the author was going for. (Implications of Will/Rachel, Puck/Rachel, and Artie/Rachel.)
Glee: War by Bellatrix13 - I clicked on this fic for the summary: Noah Puckerman is not happy. Why? Because McKinley High’s marginally less annoying version of Mariah Carey just threw a slushie in his face. No joke. And now it’s payback time. Puckleberry. But what I wound up staying for was the conversations Puck has with the other football players/his friends and the narrative voice he has through the first chapter because they are such idiotic, obnoxious boys. It's kind of hilarious how god-awful and dumb they are and makes for great parody of the characters. But I'm also curious to where the Puck/Rachel will go and how the author will evolve Puck's character, so this was a fun read. (Eventual Puck/Rachel, I assume.)
Glee: thinking of you by meggers_27 - This is not a happy story. At least not yet, since it's labeled part 1/3, but I find that it works really well on its own so far, too. It's one of those... Rachel can be a difficult character to like, especially in her relationship with Finn and how she can't/won't stay away from him even though he's clearly said he's going to stay with Quinn and their baby, but that's what works for me here. That the fic doesn't shy away from Rachel and all her imperfections even as you can't help but feel empathy for her. It feels very much like the show itself in that regard here, along with some really beautiful and almost painful writing here (in the way it's meant to be). It can be a little hard to read, but in that way that these characters' lives are all a little hard to read, which is lovely. (Puck/Rachel, Finn/Rachel.)
Glee: Revolution by Lady Chronic - I have this thing about taking two characters who don't interact much and shining a spotlight on a conversation between them, which this fic does beautifully with Artie and Kurt. I really like how human and normal both of the characters are here, even when they're not really that normal, I like how much Kurt really sees and how he gets kind of angry in the way that's simmering under the surface even when he's not in a bad mood. And I love how laid back this fic is while still saying so much intense stuff without having to say it at all. ...this is a terrible rec, so instead just go read the fic, it's really interesting. (No real warnings/pairings.)
Glee: Suspension of Disbelief by amaXdear - [Note: There are some spoilers for 1x10 in this fic and this rec.] Same as I loved the previous Kurt and Artie fic, this one is about Kurt and Quinn, which I love in the same way. Taking two character who don't interact much and exploring a little of how they might work off each other, especially with Finn between them. It's a lovely piece, I really adore how a character like Kurt just sees stuff about people, but it's also nice that Quinn sees a little more depth to him, too. I really like this Kurt and why he continued to crush so hard on/flirt with Finn even with Quinn and the baby in the picture, it's a great little piece about these two. (No real warnings/pairings, background implications of canon.)
Glee: Breakdown, Build Up by Upside-Up - This fic takes a different track from where 1x10 went, but I read it in the spirit of a divergent timeline and it was wonderful for that. I have such a soft spot for this group of characters having all this history between them since they all grew up in a small town, which this fic played really well on--the friendship between Artie and Quinn was wonderfully done. I loved seeing her character grow, but even more I loved how much I came away from this fic really loving Artie. He is such a fascinating and amazing character in this piece and I love the author's take on his family and the way Quinn just sort of folds right into their lives and how she comes to see Artie/Tina as adorable (because they are) and just. How good everything is here. It's a wonderfully sharp, but also satisfying story for Quinn being kicked out of her parents' home and where she goes after that, how Artie is there for her in a way she doesn't expect. And I have to admit, I love that a guy and a girl can have a friendship here that's not about romance at all, that it's about real friendship and being there for someone who needs it. Wonderful. (This is mostly gen, there's some Artie/Tina background, but it's not really the point.)
Glee: Amends by Upside-Up - [Note: There are spoilers for 1x10 in this fic and this rec.] After reading the author's previous fic, well, naturally I had to start clicking on the rest of her Glee fics. And this was a fix-it piece for 1x10, with Tina talking to Artie afterwards and trying to make things up to him and being honest with him. As much as I agreed with Artie's feelings in the episode, it was also really, really nice to have a lovely piece that fixed it, too. (Artie/Tina.)
Glee: A Father, A Friend by Upside-Up - Of course I had to read the next piece by the author as well, all the more so because it's a Puck and Finn friendship piece, which I have been craving from the fandom. It's all about Finn's father being gone and how he deals with that growing up, shown through a handful of short scenes, and the way Puck being his friend made things a little easier to bear. And I love that the author didn't try to oversell it, the understated quality of the fic makes it that much stronger, and I love her take on the friendship between these two boys. The final scene after Sectionals was especially nice, too. (No warnings/pairings.)
Glee: Life Goes On by msathenaxf - To be honest, I read this fic for the Finn/Quinn more than anything. I liked what the author did here, the way high school isn't the entire world for any of these characters, the way, as the title says, life goes on, even if it's not in the directions they were all determined to go in. And while it doesn't work quite as well for Rachel and Puck (but I am willing to go along with it because I am a giant sap and it's not out of the realm of possibility, I just think it needed more expanding on), it kind of works really well for Finn and Quinn. It's nice that things aren't perfect for them, that it doesn't end well when things come out about the baby. This fic was a really interesting look at the future for the characters and I-- I would not mind if this is how things turned out. <3 (Finn/Quinn, Puck/Rachel.)
Glee: We'll Make It Through by wanderinghope - This is a lovely look at Quinn's point of view during the "Keep Holding On" song and how much she's hurting, how much she's about to lose, and how much she's starting to realize that the people in glee will be there for her. It's a lovely look at her realizing how much these kids have been hurt, often times by her, and what good people they are underneath that anyway. The look at each of them in turn is a nice touch and the writing is lovely as well. A very nice Quinn piece. (This is mostly gen, with background canon implications.)
Glee: Thinking of You by meggers_27 - [ part 2 - part 2.5 ] - I have to admit to being a little wary of these two chapters, since the author has done well with keeping the Puck/Rachel and Finn/Rachel balanced in them, to the point that I'm not sure which direction it's going in. And while that's the point (and part of why I'm impressed with the fic and its lovely writing), it makes the shipper fangirl heart fear it's not going to get what it wants. *g* I do like this Rachel, though, because she feels very much like the Rachel I see on the screen and I like this Puck/Rachel because they don't just fall straight into love with each other, it's complicated and messy and they're taking what they can from each other. I'm curious to see where the rest of this goes. (Puck/Rachel, Finn/Rachel.)
Glee: Kurt and the Castrati by Aishuu - Another interesting look at Kurt's character and I really like the background of music that's put into this. I like that Kurt's a little off-beat with this and he's very much himself, no matter how painful it kind of is in that school, and the whole fic puts together an interesting background for him and his vocal range that must have been really fun to explore. I especially like the mention of other male sopranos that Kurt looked up, it's one of those things that just... felt like the right touch for the character. (No warnings/pairings.)
Glee: Spiraled Escalation Out of Control by angel-dawes - You know, I kind of want to doodle little hearts all over this fic. Part of it is that I keep expecting to run out of good Puck/Rachel fic; I mean surely it has to end at some point, right? Knowing my luck with this sort of pairing. And yet. Here is another utterly delightful and sharply written fic! And that's the other reason I want to doodle little hearts all over it--it's post-1x08 and it's about Puck deciding, well, okay, maybe they can be friends and having a really hilarious Puck POV about it (some of the stuff that goes through his head is really great, I don't think I'll ever get tired of a good Puck narrative voice) and I love how... how much of jerk he can still be, but you can tell there's a decent guy underneath there, especially when, just because he's grown up, doesn't mean the rest of the school is going to treat Rachel so nicely now. Moar plz. (Puck/Rachel eventually, one assumes.)
JE: untitled by wintersjuly - So, after Pin were on Music Station at the same time and got some of the most adorable interaction, naturally I've had a resurgance of love for them and there was this handy drabble/ficlet-fest going on and... it's wintersjuly and zombies. And AHHH I LOVE HER PIN SO MUCH because they're such silly and dumb boys without it being over the top and instead it's chewing on heads and eating brains and Pin. Also, that's one killer hilarious last line. AHHH I HAVE MISSED THEM. (Jin/Yamapi.)
White Collar: Distractions by grim_lupine - Mm, Neal's hair is very pretty and this fic makes lovely use of that fact and plays into this nice dynamic between Peter badly wanting to touch Neal's hair and how much the audience would really like to do the same. It's got some really lovely images here and just a hint of posessiveness that I love, making it a nice treat to read today. (Peter/Neal, a light R rating.)
DCU Doujinshi (scanslated) - Kuchibashi ni Cherry - Okay, so. I saw the pairing for this one (Arsenal/Nightwing) and my curiosity overcame it. It's just... the existance of this makes me so confused on how to feel! It's GD Mechano and their work is gorgeous! And it's Roy and Dick! ....but it's doujinshi. I do not expect worlds to collide like that! On the other hand, this is my pet pairing and if anything was going to be found in doujinshi (that I would read, aside from my OTPs, because I would snatch those up in a heartbeat omfg), it would be this one. Naturally, the art is gorgeous and the scanslation is lovely and the story is pretty much PWP but it's one that could slide between the pages of canon well enough and it's just. Roy/Dick porno doujinshi, holy shit. My mind is blown. And I-- I'd be lying if I didn't say I found Dick to be gorgeous in certain panels of this. You know. As he should be. (Roy/Dick, NC-17.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (raw) - Hibari-san no soboku na gimon - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be freely joinable.] This is a raw doujinshi and extremely rough/unfinished, the inking seems to be only half-done, if that. But, well. It's Banyuu and it's porn. Really, that's all I need for it to be a tasty little pick-me-up when I needed one, because her characters are just as gorgeous as ever and it doesn't need to be anything more than it is. Her art is lovely, Hibari's a sharp little thing, Dino's kind of a spaz, and there are makeouts. Excellent! (Dino/Hibari, NC-17.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (raw) - Stefano - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be freely joinable.] This is another fairly straightforward doujinshi, though more on a PG level this time. I was a little wary of it at first, the art on the first page didn't immediately impress me or knock me over, but... after another page or two, I really warmed up to this one and found that it got pretty damn hot. It's got just enough of a sketch-like quality remaining that it works with these characters and both of them look beautifully drawn in a lot of the panels and Hibari's a violent little bastard and Dino likes to hug him and kiss him on the head a lot. ALL THINGS I LOVE. (Dino/Hibari.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (raw) - JAJAUMA Suicide LOVER 1 - Do you know what's the best thing about OMEGA 2-D's doujinshi? That they can do girl!Hibari right. Not only is she smoking hot and kind of total wetdream fodder, she's still in character with Hibari. She still doesn't give a shit and is a violent little motherfucker! Awesome! But it's also the way other characters react to her, especially Yamamoto's crush on her and when he finds out she's with Dino and just. a;sldkfjas;lkj I seriously just about cracked my way up through this whole thing. And, really, the art is solid and professional-level, there are some panels that are downright beautiful looking. It still has its own style, but you can recognize Amano's work here, too. I just... really love this group and their hilarious doujinshi. (Yamamoto/Hibari, Dino/Hibari.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) - Lunatic Fringe - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be freely joinable.] I admit, I wish the scans for this one had been a little easier to read (the resolution is smaller than I'm used to these days) because I had a skip a few of the side notes that were impossible to read on my resolution, but other than that, this seems to be a solidly done doujin. And it's kind of a hilarious one as well--Shamal winds up giving Dino an aphrodisiac, who then tries to stay away from Hibari because he's trying not to be a total dick, but Shamal and Reborn pretty much say Dino's treating him like a kid and that pisses Hibari right the fuck off. And Hibari does what Hibari always does. Toss in some adorableness between the two of them, the occasional really pretty panel here and there, some more hilarity, and you have a great little doujinshi. (Dino/Hibari, it's labeled R18, but I'd say closer to PG13.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) - Cat Navigate - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be freely joinable.] I know I should probably be ashamed of how much I love cat ears on characters like this, but I'm kind of really not that ashamed. Not even when it's that sort of weird mix Japan has between Dino being "fatherly" and being "a guy" (in the words of the doujin itself), where he's protector and lover, because it's all about being that kind of doujinshi. It's a fairly simple story--kitty Hibari is a little older now, but Dino has to go out of town, then Hibari gets moody, Dino overreacts, there's porn, and they settle back down--with fairly simple art, but. I love it like it's delicious candy. The art is straightforward, but the doujinshika works in a lot of detail and I could see this being on the level of a manga, honestly. But it's still a D18 doujinshi with cat ears and porn. God bless Japan for that. (Dino/Hibari, NC-17.)
