- One Piece - The Pirate Tradition by cneko2 - This is one of those stories where you just sort of... have to go with the story, you have to be an unrepetent fan of the characters/pairings/crack presented within and just... have fun with it. And if you can do that? This fic made me giggle so much. Just... the casual way Luffy has some sort of hair-brained idea and the others are all "WTF!" or "IDIOT!!" at hime is great. Nami's treatment of Luffy especially just made me sparkle with mad laughter, when he just casually blurts out he's been sleeping with Nami and... and... *dies* Sanji and Zoro's reactions are PERFECT. Especially Zoro's. I can just see him thinking that about them, too. Just... silly, silly fun. (Very light LuffyxNami and Zoro/Sanji sliiiiiiiiiighty hinted at, but I don't know that I'd even count it.)
- Hunter x Hunter - Growing Up by Celeste - This was a lovely little story about, as the author says, Killua and what it means to grow up. The way Killua looks at Gon, the way things are changing for him a little, while Gon is just still so... Gon was perfectly on target with the characterizations. But what pushed me over the edge for this fic were the little details of Gon's activities while Killua was idly watching him. And the way that the fic ended. But then again, Gon was right in his own way. He was right here, with Killua. Very much in line with how I see the characters as well. ♥ (Some light Killua/Gon.)
- Gravitation - The Off Track by Aoi-Umi - This story did start out a little shakey and while not bad... well, a lot of it is that the fangirl Japanese is really distracting and rarely the mark of a good fic. But by the second chapter? This fic had clicked into gear and was just great. I think what sold me was a moment somewhere in the second chapter or so (which is when it started clicking for me, of course) where Yuki was genuinely annoyed by Shuuichi, even when he wasn't being a jerk. He didn't secretly melt into a puddle of goo when he said something mean to Shuuichi, he wasn't secretly going all goopy over his cute little Shu-chan, he was... Yuki. He was genuinely pissed off that Shuuichi was being a brat. ♥ (The scene when they have to pull over because Shuuichi needs to go to the bathroom was one of my favorites for that. Because Yuki was honest-to-god annoyed with certain things. XD) And then the fic started tossing in all these little moments dealing with the premise of the fic--Yuki and Shuuichi on a vacation in America, because Shuuichi decided that was the Thing To Do--that were actually really well-done and not gratuituous culture references, that I started to sparkle so hard that you'll probably need one of those beekeeper outfits just to get through all the shoujo bubbles and sparklies in the air.
I know this is reading like a pretty standard, "Yay! They were in character! Yay! There were cute moments in the fic! Yay! There was nothing wrong with it for me to point out!" but it's more than that. It was fun to read, the writing totally readable, the characterization just right on, and a potentially unsteady premise done in such a way that I'm having so much fun with it. Besides, you know you want to read about Shuuichi attempting to fish and the stunning failure that you know has to result from it because Shuuichi is Shuuichi and Yuki just can't let him gouge his own eye out with a fishing pole, no matter how much he really wants to just walk away. XD (YukixShuuichi.)
- Prince of Tennis - xiexie [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Well. I was sort of waffling back and forth on this site (the artist does a really good Ryoma, but I wavered on the rest of her characters) when I hit the Midoriyama fanart. Let me say that again. Midoriyama fanart. And not just any Midoriyama fanart, pretty Midoriyama fanart. I had no idea such a thing existed in this world! ^_~ In all seriousness, though, the artist does really beautiful fanart for the school and she does really lovely Hyoutei illustrations of Shishido and Ohtori and her oekaki is really fun/good if you like oekaki fanart, which I often do. There's this one Shishido fanart that's just... his long hair is swirling around his head and he's got these lovely intense eyes. And then there's here ADORABLE oekaki of Ryoma with Karupin inside his shirt. And I mentioned the gorgeous Midoriyama fanart? Yes? Okay. I really ♥ this site. XD (Maybe a little shounen ai, but not very much. Seigaku and ShishiTori.)
- One Piece - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I hesitated on this site for a bit because the artist's proportions start off a little wonky, but I hung with the site for awhile and if you get about six or so illustrations in... the artist's style tightens up and you can see her start to get really good. Her coloring is fantastic, the kind of CG coloring that's bright without being gaudy, the kind that could pass for officially coloring, which is something I always appreciate. Plus, there's this illustration of Zoro and Sanji from the Groggy fight, with Sanji still having that ball thing on his head, that will NEVER STOP BEING GREAT. But she also does great single-character illustrations or great illustrations of Sanji and Zoro snarling at each other and OMG ZORO IN THE CYANDORIAN OUTFIT I LOVE THIS ARTIST FOR THAT. XD XD XD (Zoro/Sanji.)
- One Piece - pumpkinhead [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I originally waffled on this site for awhile... until I realized two things. One, there are the occasionally Luffy/Nami illustrations on the site and that wins me over like there's no tomorrow. And, two, there's an R-rated gallery. The artist does rather... light, simple, airy illustrations that are nice, light treats. Though, there's one of Luffy holding Nami and has the most intense expression on his face that I love. But there's also blood-splattered!Sanji that looks way too pretty and there's a really interesting set of illustrations of when they're older and Zoro and Sanji have settled a bit more, with a kid even. I know that sounds like it should be OMG WTF EWWW, but it's really not. I like to think I'd totally react in the proper way if a ZoSan set of illustrations was too over the OOC line, but... I liked these. They were... well, cute. The characters are recognizable and I got enough of that OP vibe from the illustrations to satisfy me. That's all I ask for. XD (Zoro/Sanji, a little Luffy/Nami.)
- One Piece - wild*pink [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, I fell hard and fast for this site, I can tell you that. It's one of those where the artist does these illustrations that are, in some ways, light and soft, but in other ways just solid and intense enough that I walk away from the site feeling very sated. Her lines are fantastic, just making everything she draws so pretty, and you know what? I love an artist who draws a good kiss. One that doesn't tease too badly, yet still manages to make each one get me all fluttery or happy-sigh'ing or whatever. Her diary art just delights me because it doesn't really lose any of the artist's skill when she's drawing these lines and poses that are just... I guess it's hard to explain. I could point out one or two illustrations on the site and they would be nice, but it wouldn't get across what made me really love this site. It was one of those sites where I was so taken by the gallery as a whole that I couldn't stop clicking from image to image because they were all right in my wheelhouse. Because I loved the kisses, because I loved how gorgeous Sanji looked, because I loved how gorgeous Zoro looked, because it was a happy site. Sure, I love the snark as much as the next fangirl, need the snark with these two, but... sometimes I want my softer moments in fanart, sometimes I just want them to kiss and enjoy it. Plus, you know, if you can find the under gallery.... *__* Maybe not for everyone, but the site sends me over the moon. (Zoro/Sanji, a little graphic content if you can find it.)
- One Piece - Hardluck MA2 [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Another site that's not going to be for everyone, as it's rather, errr, odd is a way to put it, I guess, and might raise a few eyebrows, but... I found myself won over by the really fantastic coloring that looks very professional. The artist just nails the OP anime's colors and her inking/lines are just fantastic. I mean, with a little work on her proportions on some of them, you probably could have mistaken them for official art, which is something I always appreciate. Plus, hey, smutty fanart is smutty fanart and that always gets a thumbs up from me. ^_~ And, really, that wanted poster of Zoro and Sanji? That was pretty cool. ^_^v (Zoro/Sanji, some graphic content.)
- One Piece - Ryokuoubou [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I'm not sure how to explain this artist's style, because it can seem very off at times, very violent or painful at times, yet... there's a certain intensity to it that isn't necessarily completely out of place with the characters. True, there's a lot of blood (or other things *cough*) usually dripping down the characters in rivulets, but that's also not necessarily out of place with the characters. There are a lot of... mm, I wouldn't necessarily call them squarer angles, but they're certainly more harsh and reminsicent of a certain style of doujinshi that I don't know how to describe, and I guess the art would best be described as... harsh, rough, and gruff? Something like that. Might not be for everyone (note: the "wet" gallery is very NOT WORK SAFE and isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but if you like Zoro/Sanji... there's probably at least a little bit of kink in you... still, be warned, it's rather rough), but I was intrigued at the very least. (Zoro/Sanji, some graphic content.)
- One Piece - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I might not have rec'd this site, simply because there's not a whole lot of art to the site, but... man, those little brightly colored chibis of Zoro and Sanji just totally and completely won me over. They're adorable in a nearly physically painful way. ♥ Plus, there's an absolutely hysterical sprite of Sanji with that little ball on his head from the Groggy brothers fight that just... I can't stop smiling/giggling every time I see it. Oh, and fox!Sanji is the CUTEST THING EVER. *coughs* But even beyond that, the artist draws really nice lines to her art (there's this b&w one of Zoro that's just fantastic) and does really fantastic things with color. And I mentioned the adorableness of the chibi!Zoro/Sanji kiss, right? Because I squeaked something terrible at that one. >_> (Some Zoro/Sanji.)
- One Piece/Naruto/Bleach/Death Note - 032 [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Okay, see, I have this thing about sprites, right? If I could, I would totally be adopting, like, eight bajillion of them, but I never know which ones are all right to use and which ones are off-limits. And I see a lot of sprites and they're all really cute, but this site... oh, man, I think I nearly hurt something squee'ing over the cute. All those little One Piece or Naruto or Bleach or Death Note characters... well, it definitely helps that the site is KakaIru friendly and has some of the flat-out best sprites ever, like the ones of Kakashi with his nin dogs or Yondaime trying to summon a powerful frog (I nearly spit my soda back onto the screen at that one) or Kakashi kissing Iruka with little hearts floating around or Asuma and Shikamaru playing Go or just whatever. I could stare at these sprites all day long. (Even if I do bemoan the lack of an Orihime sprite.) I love this site more than bold and italics tags can convey. (Maybe a little Zoro/Sanji or KakaIru, but it's also gen-friendly, if you avoid the one page of KakaIru sprites. >_>)
- Full Metal Alchemist/Hikaru no Go - [ English Fanart Site ] - I don't even remember how I ound this artist when I was going through DeviantArt, what image it was that first caught my attention, but damn does she do amazing artwork. Her Hikaru no Go stuff is just beautiful, the level of detail and gorgeousness of it is just... incredible, yeah. And while there are only two FMA illustrations, I had to include it because that one of Roy? Is fantastic. Totally fucking fantastic. (Aha! I found her through her one Eyeshield 21 fanart, which is fantastic and I mourn that she doesn't seem to have more.) Plus, a cute little one of Roy and Ed, so... yeah, onto the FMA section it goes. Just... I flail over this artist and how amazing her work is. Lines, colors, details, proportions, everything! *__* (Some AkiHika/HikaAki.)
- Naruto - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Lee-friendly site! Lee-friendly site! EEEEEEEE! And there is an adorable LeeSaku illustration that I love to tiny little pieces on the site. I do wish there'd been more LeeSaku fanart, but that's just my pairing bias coming through, really. The site, while not having a ton of art was really fun for me to go through because it was very Lee-friendly (not Lee-only, but I think he's the artist's favorite) and she did these really... well, neat watercolor-like painting-esque images of him in a lot of different situations/with a lot of different people. She did some absolute adorable illustrations of Lee when he was younger, some really nice group illustrations (I found I actually really kinda like her Lee/TenTen ones, too.) and I just... ahhhh, my heart is happy to know that Lee fanart exists~ (No real pairing themes/warnings.)
- Naruto - Wyld Heaven [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, hell, I have to rec this site, too, because it's a little bit more Gai-centric than it is Lee-centric, but Lee appears in a lot of the illustrations and he is SO CUTE that I just fell in love again. Also, the artist did the most adorable illustration of the Sannin as kids and then one of puppy!Gai and puppy!Lee and I think I about spazzed at levels only dogs can hear at that. >_> The artist has a sketch-like quality to her work, but it works for the illustrations, especially with the colors she uses often times, and her Lee is just... the most adorable thing and I waaaaaaant one! *loves* (No real pairing themes/warnings.)
- Naruto - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I was won over by this site by how it was just... a really solid, good site. I was probably mostly won over by the handful of KakaIru illustrations on the site, but I think I'm ultimately rec'ing this site because it has a variety of things, because I like the illustration of Hinata or I liked the illustration of Anko and Kakashi or I liked the illustration of Iruka and Naruto or I liked the oekaki illustrations--which are really kinda cool. XD And, interestingly enough, I found I kinda liked the Kakashi/Anko illustrations here. They were well-done. As were... well, everything I suppose. One of those mish-mash sites that I just... liked. XD (A little tiny bit of KakaIru, some KakaAnko, lots and lots of gen.)
- Naruto - NICE GUY [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I don't generally seek out Gai sites, but I was on a Lee kick this morning and that lead me to this site, which is really pretty good. There's this one of Lee crying against Gai, who has the gentlest look on his face that's just... it's lovely, which isn't something you can often say about Gai. (I'm not calling him ugly, but there's a difference between that and 'lovely', y'know?) And the main focus is Gai, but he's drawn really well, and there were a handful of Lee illustrations to keep my attention on the site, so I wound up liking it a lot. The artist really has a lot of affection for Gai, you can tell, and she really nails the spirit of the character, I think. (No real warnings/pairings.)
- Bleach - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - The gallery proper of this site? The lines are a little off, but the artist's poses/concepts and level of detail really work with the Bleach series. I think it might actually be the scanning and resizing the images that does it more than her lines, because the artist is really talented. It's nice that she does a variety of characters as well, even if they're mostly the Shinigami. However? The real reason you want to go here is to find the b&w sketches and the comics. The b&w sketches are adorable and really fun (there's a beautiful one of Byakuya sitting in a window at night) and the comics... well, there are two of them and they make my growing Renji/Rukia fangirl swoon. They're really well-laid out and detailed, really getting across the quiet heartache of the characters in the first one and a really cool take on the fight between Ichigo and Renji and Rukia's (sort of) reaction to it. (No real warnings/pairings, though, maybe a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle Renji/Rukia.)
- Eyeshield 21 - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - This was one of those sites that... the artist is really talented overall and I liked everything I saw... but there were, like, five illustrations that just nailed the mark of being exactly what I wanted out of Eyeshield 21 fanart, in that they were sweet shounen-ai fun and just so pretty. The artist really does well with her colors, making them look nicely rich and detailed, but when she's on the ball with Hiruma? He actually looks DAMN good. And her Sena is so adorable, just perfect for the character. (There's this one illustration in the 'thanks' section with Hiruma and Sena out on a cold night, Hiruma with a cranky expression as he yanks Sena closer that's just... man, it looks good. The lines/inking is just great and the colors really suit the image well. ....err, yes, just go see it.) So the whole site winds up being one of those that hits the right spot with me and puts a smile on my face. (Some Hiruma/Sena.)
- Gungrave - Ark [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - O...OMG... I didn't think I'd find a site like this, like, ever! PRETTY Gungrave fanart. A little on the girly side sometimes, but it's so pretty that I find I don't care. It's just... the artist draws the characters uber-pretty, which might not really fit with the characters, but I find I have a hard time complaining when she draws Brandon and Harry as kids and they are the cutest thing ever. Or when she draws Brandon in that suit he wore in the middle of the series and he looks so gorgeous or when she draws Harry kissing Brandon and it's just beautifully detailed (the kiss illustration is really the best on the site, I think, in terms of pure level of sharp, clean lines, fantastic details, and gorgeous coloring) or when she'd drawing a fabulously detailed Grave illustration. She does wonderful things with the characters' hair and eyes and I just... I fell in love. Plus, the current top illustration with the various incarnations of Brandon is, like, the CUTEST THING EVER. (A little bit Harry/Brandon, but I recommend it for the single-character illustrations, too.)
