SHARING TIME:
ღ - Someone should have smacked me yesterday for not posting to dw with this. Which reminds me! I've been making the attempt to default to dreamwidth these days (since tumblr broke me of my loyalty to lj), but I will always crosspost and I'm fine with talking to people on either site, so you probably won't even notice much difference. But if you want to follow me, it's the same on dw: tomomichi @dreamwidth (or tomomichi @tumblr)
ღ - I don't think I've ever actually made my way through an entire set of Yuletide fics that I've had on my list to read, but I'm still going to give it a shot this year!

AND ONTO THE RECS:
    30 Rock - 1 Fanfic
    Adventure Time - 1 Fanfic
    Aladdin - 2 Fanfics
    Archie Comics - 2 Fanfics
Attack the Block - 2 Fanfics
    The Authority - 1 Fanfic
    Captain America/Thor (movieverses) - 1 Fanfic
    Gundam Wing - 1 Fanfic
    Oglaf - 1 Fanfic
    Young Avengers - 3 Fanfics

30 Rock: Kippers and Whistles by ijemanja - I wasn't sure why I picked up this fic, since I'm not usually one to read outside my usual ship, but I guess I'm easy for a fic that gets a lot of kudos. And I'm glad I read this one! The voices for the characters were so delightful and Liz was just so spot on, in all the ways that makes her hilarious and amazing, that I wound up thinking, yeah, okay, maybe I could ship this a bit.... The whole thing is just really quite inspired, right down to the word choices for everything. (Wesley/Liz.)

Adventure Time: So we all are growing young by CherryIce - I feel like the more serious moments of this fic shouldn't work, that Adventure Time of all things doesn't need any kind of serious undercurrents! But the author doesn't try to oversell it, instead it's just sort of quietly there and only lightly touched on, without losing the delightful tone of the show itself. The way Bubblegum and Marceline are both written is perfect, the way they clash against each other because they're so different, yet you can still feel how very important they are to each other! And the writing is absolutely lovely, I didn't want the fic to end because it was so pretty to read, so many little details that the author worked in, so much gorgeous characterization, especially Bubblegum's desire to know things--! And I really loved that this may or may not have been shippy, that that wasn't really the point, because the emotional relationship was so satisfying by itself. (This was probably gen, but you could see Bubblegum/Marceline, too.)

Aladdin: The Hunt for Man-Yu-El by cimorene - This was a really cute fic about the residents of Agrabah trying to fix their water purifiers and Jasmine dealing with her city as Queen of it, rather than relying on Aladdin or Genie to do it for her. It's difficult and you can really feel for her, but she's terribly awesome and I enjoyed the implications of this fic tying into the post-apocalyptic theory for the movie. It's a simple piece, but a really satisfying one, especially as a fan of Jasmine's character. (Some Aladdin/Jasmine, but it's not really the point.)

Aladdin: Passings by ChokolatteJedi - A timeline of Genie's masters and how things came to be, both for the character and for the world that we eventually see in the movie. It's not a pleasant look, but it's a fascinating one and I really like the way the author used the post-apocalyptic theory to explain a lot of the stuff here. It's a bit of a darker fic than usual for Disney (well, darker than the source content, that is) but I found it to be a really interesting read this morning. (No warnings/pairings.)

Archie Comics: Cars, Sandwiches and Other Kisses by yue_ix - Every time Yuletide comes around--as it's usually about the only time I read Archie fic--I sort of pine for other pairings, but then can't resist clicking on the Betty/Veronica fic and remember, all over again, why I would seriously, seriously much rather ship this ship. I really liked the way Betty slowly realizes that she's so very attracted to Veronica, the way it slowly changes everything in her life and the way she looks at her relationships, how it's never terribly angsty, it's just... sweet, a little aching, and then so very good. Not to mention, Jughead is just absolutely perfect in this fic! (Betty/Veronica.)

Archie Comics: Friends Don't Let Friends Suffer Alone by tuesday - So, by the time I had read the previous fic, I was totally ready for more. This fic has much of a similar feel--lovely writing, sweet, a little aching, but then so very good--but it's still just as much of a delight to read through Betty's realizations about herself and how all their friends go out of their way to help her, to try to get her to talk about what's obviously gone wrong with her. Jughead, once again, is a spectacular friend and I actually really loved Reggie in this fic, but mostly I really loved Betty's feelings for Veronica and how wonderful they are together. I absolutely, absolutely loved this. (Betty/Veronica.)

Attack the Block: give me courage not to fear no one by kristin - This is a short piece, a handful of scenes set pre-movie, that really help build up Moses' character and the relationships he has with the various people around him. It strikes that balance between these kids being little punks and yet still good kids somewhere inside, and really does justice to this collection of characters. (No warnings/pairings.)

Attack the Block: Stand Up by Bexless - This is a post-movie piece, about the aftermath of Moses being taken away and being detained and how he's doing in the months afterwards, which has a feeling very much like the movie itself. It's almost downtrodden in places, except it's not, instead it ends exactly the way you'd expect Moses' life to continue to go, which I am now firmly convinced that this is exactly how it went afterwards. The writing is excellent, Moses' character and voice are especially spot-on, and it's quite satisfying. (No warnings/pairings.)

The Authority: Bodies at Rest by yeats - There's something about this fic, and the writing in it, that captured the sharp, rough edges of this group of characters that really sucked me in. It's insightful and the writing is lovely and the characterization is spot on and the little touches all build up to more than the sum of their parts and it's... it's hard to put into words. It's a wonderful piece to read that really felt like the original book, every character and relationship is dead on, and I love it for all of that. (Apollo/Midnighter, Jenny Sparks/Swift.)

Captain America & Thor (movieverse): Volition by teh-helenables - Pero linked me to this fic and I definitely have to admit that I had a moment of "...." at the pairing (Loki and Captain America??) but I was intrigued by the premise (When Loki turns up on the Avenger's doorstep, brokenhearted and realizing that he's been in the wrong and wants to join the good side, Steve is the only one at home.) and the early lines were good, so I was just sucked right in. It's a really lovely look at Loki's character, what does and doesn't drive him, how no one chooses things for him, so he makes his own decisions, and it just progresses naturally from there. The writing is sharp, the scenes unfold perfectly, it was so easy to picture in my head, all the little touches were wonderful, and the final scene is rather perfect. I loved this dearly. (Captain America/Loki.)

Gundam Wing: Every Day A Little Death by Anasazi
"Ladies and gentlemen, I present Heero and Relena, the modern day Astaire and Rogers, in their classic routine -- watch as they dance the Emotional Sidestep." I picked the link for this fic up from fancake because I was intrigued by the summary and the pairings and the rec, especially since it's hard for me to find Relena fic I like. And this fic is definitely one that's hard to find an audience for, because it's not really for 1xR fans or 1x2 fans. It's a beautiful look at a Relena who loves Heero, knows he cares about her, but doesn't return the same feelings, even though they're married. I can see this as a future for the characters, but what I really love about it is how much the fic makes you really feel for Relena, how understandable her feelings are, how human she is in a difficult situation, how much empathy I have for her character. I love that this fic demonizes no one, instead it makes you feel for all parties involved, and it's lovely for all those things. (Some Heero/Relena, some implied Heero/Duo.)

Oglaf: A Very Oglaf Christmas by kitsunealyc - This fandom may not be huge, but it doesn't always need to be, not when it has utterly perfect gems like this one. The Snow Queen sets out to find the Lesbian Mercenary again, running into most of the other characters along the way, and the author absolutely captures the fun, hilarious, sex-laden feel of this world. There were at least two points in the fic where I had to set it down just to utterly laugh because it was so hilarious, but I also loved this fic because, aaaaaah, the Snow Queen! She was so perfect! And Xoa! Oh my god, I just about cried with laughter. And there were little extra mouseover texts at the end! Basically, every single thing about this fic was absolutely, completely pitch-perfect. Goddamn, this fandom. (NSFW, given that it's Oglaf.)

Young Avengers: Three Times Tommy and Billy Felt like Brothers by lilpocketninja - This was such a cute, fun series of scenes with Billy and Tommy, whom I'm glad are getting at least some attention in the fandom. It's their usual way of interacting with each other, Tommy's sharp comments and rough edges, to Billy's heart on his sleeve and not quite sure how to handle things, which is a big part of their interaction, but it's not... it's not entirely uncomfortable, it's still somehow good and sweet and they're such brothers to each other in these scenes. Toss in some cute lines and it's a charming little fic that gave me my YA fix this morning. (Some background Teddy/Billy, but it's mostly gen.)

Young Avengers: The Only Permanent Tenderness by victoria_p (musesfool) - This is a cute, sweet fic about a future where Billy and Teddy move in together and where they are at that point in their lives. It's got touches of the shit they've been through, but it's mostly a fluffy piece that feels all warm and fuzzy to read. Very sweet. (Teddy/Billy.)

Young Avengers: The Problem With Coming Out by boywonder - This was another delightful fic with Tommy and Billy, full of those moments that are sharp and jagged, but also surprisingly touching and sweet. There's such an important relationship here, but neither really quite knows how to deal with it, and yet they're just obviously so naturally brothers. Tommy's teasing Billy is always a delight, especially when he teases him about his relationship with Teddy, but it's not in an unaccepting way and that is the best kind. This wound up being one of those fics that just... quietly made me happy and that much more satisfied with the YA fandom. :D (Some background Teddy/Billy, but it's mostly gen.)
