- Love Mode - Coming Home by Rhoe - Reiji/Naoya fic has to be written just right to hit me, since I tend to be more attracted to the louder, more hyper pairs (....or whatever it is that you want to call Kiichi) and the sort of slower, softer, quieter Reiji/Naoya can be more difficult to do in fic, I suspect. However, this fic captured that same quality I feel when I'm reading about them in the story. And Naoya's characterization is wonderful--unsure of himself and his place in Reiji's life, quiet and reserved, all too human, and yet never crossing a line into whiny or annoying or self-pitying, like he never did in the manga, either. Just... a perfect balance for a Reiji/Naoya fic, I can't say it better than that. (Reiji/Naoya.)
- Saiyuki - The Reason and Don't Follow Me by Inaho - I keep telling myself that I'm not going to read any more Saiyuki fic, that I can't take the pain of the fandom anymore, and then I'll see some fic that's under 1,000 words that lures me in with the dual promises of Gaiden-based fic and genfic. Geeeeeeeeeenfic, it calls out to me. Geeeeeeeeen, it's harder to screw that up! (Okay, so I'm slightly bitter. Shut up.) And, well, crap. These two stories are just... they're... I wouldn't call them "cute", but they're light, they're not ouchy, and the characterization is great, because they're stories that I could just SEE sliding right in between the pages of canon. Plus, it had Kenren and Goku interacting in the second fic and I have such the soft spot for that, because it's so cute and the scene said so much without having to say it and, oh, god, the end STILL cracks just PICTURING that, because it is SO PERFECT for the Saiyuki world. It is. Just... read. They're short and fun and how anyone could not like them is beyond me. (No warnings/pairings.)
- Cowboy Bebop - Sentimental Journey by Agent Orange - You know, I'm not sure what to say about this story, because Agent Orange is one of those fic authors that is a staple of the fandom and everyone recs the fics if they have a Bebop page. And it's not without good reason, they're the epitome of what Bebop fic should be--keeping in tune with the darker, more jagged-edged side of the series, that these characters are far from elegant or balanced or anything but royally screwed up. Yet, the little moments of humor or Ed's bouncing along to help out "Santa" or the final scene where she presents her "gift" (which had me rolling around practically clutching my sides with laughter) keep it from being a horrible mess of hurt and pain. It's not perfectly happy, but it shouldn't be, this is what I want from Bebop fic--funny, sharp, clever, I laugh out loud in places, I want to hug the characters in other places, want to smack them in others, and always feel that sort of faint sense of... 'Well, I suppose this isn't so bad.' togetherness by the time everything is done. Plus? Beautiful use of the background Bebop world, it all felt right, right down to the way things so often seem to be connected. It hit all the right buttons, dead-center. (No warnings/pairings.)
- One Piece - The Fantasy Empire [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Okay, this is what I'm on about, this is the kind of Zoro/Sanji site that really scratches the itch I have for them and just makes it fun to be a fan of these two. The artist's style is really reminiscent (if a bit more traditionally pretty) of the manga's art, that sense of clean lines and nice details and the sense of... well, I hate to call it "violence", but I suppose that's what it is. Whether directed at each other or whether they're fighting side by side, these are guys of action and movement and fight and that really comes through in the art here, I think. Even when they're grinning like hell or when they're kissing or even just standing around and posing, they retain that sense. Perhaps softer than the manga itself, but it's the kind that hits my buttons just right--plus, I really like the artist's coloring, she does an AWESOME Sanji, every once in awhile the artist just NAILS the One Piece feel, and there's a little bit of smut if you can find it~~ ♥ I really can't ask for more. XD (Zoro/Sanji.)
- Full Metal Alchemist/DNAngel - [ English Fanart Site ] - I had to rec this illustration for the artist's current Featured art, the one of Ed in military uniform with his hair swirling around him because it is flat-out GORGEOUS. Just... wow, I could drool over that one for quite some time. The rest of her FMA fanart is good but! She also does DNAngel fanart! DNAngel fanart of Dark and Krad! Her coloring is really the thing that makes her art, I think, it uses the CG coloring really well and makes her art fun to look at. Plus, I'm totally in love with those two back-to-back Dark/Krad illustrations. Their haaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiir~~ *___* Oh, and that one of Roy and Ed fighting is NICE. +__+ Hopefully this artist will continue to draw and post, she's got a lot of potential. (No out and out pairings, but I might detect some hinting of Dark/Krad, it's hard to tell.)
- Naruto - [ English Fanart Site ] - You know, I know the Nine-Tails is male (or at least the voice would indicate it is), but this artist's running theme of making the Nine-Tails female... actually really kind of works with the way it's done here. The "BitchKyuubi Collaboration" one? Where female!Nine-Tails is throwing a wicked smile over her shoulder as her arm is around Naruto, her red dress and nine orange tails swishing behind her? SO COOL. Because the art is... ehhh, it's not exactly rough, but it's got these sharp, jagged, pointed edges to the feel of it (something like that) and it ends up just being really cool and I might not have gotten onboard with such a concept, but I find it REALLY intriguing here. Then you add in that the artist does some really cool Jiraiya art and OMG I LOVE HER JIRAIYA/TSUNADE, which are also in that same sort of sharp, jagged, harsh-edged style that just WORKS for this artist. I'm repeating myself a lot, so I'll just end with AHAHAHAHA, OMG, YAY FOR JIRAIYA/TSUNADE~! <3<3<3 Totally worth checking this artist out. (Some Jiraiya/Tsunade, maybe a little bit of other pairings, but no themes.)
- Cowboy Bebop - PACE [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I really wish this artist had done more Cowboy Bebop fanart because her work is very solid, especially the cel-like coloring. The artist does especially well with Spike, which you can tell going through the gallery, because his illustrations seem to be the most flushed-out, with the best proportions and the most background details--the one of him in the city at night is VERY COOL. But there's also a beautiful one of Faye that I'm quite taken with; the lines of her face and body just make her look as lovely as she should. I also like the rough sketches--the first two on the second set of rough sketches are particularily apt for the series and, again, make me wish the artist had done more. <3 (No warnings/pairings.)
- Saiyuki - [ English Fanart Site ] - I first stumbled over this artist via her chibi!kitty!Sanzo fanart and promptly lost it squeeing over the cute. Oh, Sanzo would never, ever wear an expression that cute, but WHO THE HELL CARES WHEN I GET CUTE, ADORABLE, PRETTY CHIBI KITTY SANZO FANART? Surely not I. *fangirls* But it's also her beautifully colored on of Gojyo and Hakkai as kids or her annoyed!Sanzo with chibi-Ikkou-tachi hanging off him or almost-chibi Sanji and Gojyo fighting or her group illustrations that make this such a wonderful set of illustrations to stumble over. Her lines are very clean and straight-forward, while her coloring is that kind of almost jewel-like but without being gaudy style that I have such a weakness for. Her shading is also really nice and it's surprising how much that can contribute to a nice image. I just... I ♥, man. <3<3<3 (Mmm, I don't know that I'd say there were any pairings, really.)

or not^! Have you seen Momonoke hime ? Her adoptive mother is a giant female wolf but the japanese seiyuu has a very deep and booming voice.
Most of the youkai and momonoke (Kyuubi is a mononoke isn't it ?) are female or very effiminate... don't ask why evil is always female ^_^

Date: 2004-10-05 07:45 am (UTC)It's been awhile since I saw the episode where Naruto talks to the Nine-Tails, but it really seemed like the gender was male. However, I don't know enough about the language to tell what masculine/feminine words might have been used and it's been so long since I saw Mononoke Hime that I can't remember what her adoptive mother sounds like now. _o_
If Nine-Tails were female... it'd be interesting, though, I suspect it would still be male, since it seems like so many of Kishimoto-sensei's demons/youkai are male. (Or at least I'm thinking of Boss Gama.)
