- Kyou Kara Maou - In Element by Aki - I swear to god, I could read Aki's fics for, like, forever and be happy with them. Reading her MaruMa fics is just so... sating somehow, for me. Somehow... the pining for Konrad/Yuuri fic afterwards doesn't hurt so much because she just nails what I adore about them and really connects with me over the characters. And what I mean by that is... with MaruMa, because it's such a meta series, it's hard to care about characters who were designed to be stereotypes and yet... my little fangirl heart went *doki*doki* when I read this fic, because I CARE. Because she gets across Yuuri's feelings just so damned well and even though she doesn't have to say a word about it, I can just feel Konrad's as well and there are a ton of little details that make the whole fic just sort of *FWOOM* to life right in my head and is one of those scenes that could slide right into the series itself that's how pitch-perfect her writing is. And it's Konrad/Yuuri without... going overboard? It highlights what makes me see these two as a couple and why they work. And... guh, just painfully in character, that's how lovely it is. I... I... flail with love. (Light Konrad/Yuuri.)
- Love Mode - When Doves Cry by Rhoe - This is a story that... well, I'd only read a tiny little bit with Tien Li when I first saw this fic and then later, after reading the text translations for volumes eight through eleven (I HAD to know the background story and how things were going to turn out!), I came back to it and just... knowing what I know now makes this story so much more bittersweet and touching. It's lovely, soft and accomplishes such a mood even in such a short drabble. And makes me hurt for Tien Li and somewhere deep inside me a 'shippy fangirl starts rousing and peering curiously at Tien Li and his brother.... >__> (Hmm, no real pairings, but if you know Tien Li in the series, you'll know about where this fic is focused.)
- Prince of Tennis - EYE : RIS by Tracy - Aishuu recommended this fic to me when I was bitching about trying to find TezuFuji fic, so I steal the link from her. And, wow, this was just... I wasn't sure about it at first, I'm not terribly fond of stories that start out with Tezuka and Fuji having met earlier in their lives usually, but this story handled it wonderfully, it wasn't overly sappy or cliche, it was just... one of those little things. (And OMG YUUTA WAS SO CUTE AND I LOVE HIM AND WANT TO HUG HIM AND EEEEEE IT WAS PERFECT.) It wasn't even important to the story and I loved that, because the story was about Tezuka and Fuji and showing how they started to drift towards each other, showed those little moments that I could just see (for some reason, the tree-climbing thing with Fuji seemed so utterly perfect to me... as was the thing with the handcuffs, which should not have worked, but did XD), especially their first kiss underneath that one tree and the use of snow as a theme without being cliche and the apples and the lovely writing and just... god, I floated around the room in a blissful cloud after having read this story. Go, shoo, good Tezuka/Fuji fics, wonderfully IC, and I'm very grateful to Aishuu for pointing it out. ♥ (Tezuka/Fuji.)
- Prince of Tennis - Fly by Emily Ravenwood - Speaking of Tezuka/Fuji that puts me into a happy, blissful mood, I adore Emily for writing such a... such an intense story that really works so well with the characters. She has this way of writing stories that are really... weighty, I guess. Of getting into the psychology of the characters, especially these incredibly complex, deep characters, but doing so in such a way that it's not just a character essay, it's a story that moves them forward. Tezuka and Fuji's match in this story was intense and tension-filled and the sense of nerves and high-strung-ness of Fuji was nearly tangible, it felt like. Then you got into the smut, which is... just hot and wow and *__*-inducing. I think this may be my favorite smut of hers yet--it's both beautiful and really intense, because there are all these little details (like with the washcloth) that convey a sensation, rather than just a visual. And that's what I love with this story--I could nearly feel that sensation of warmth of the water or the texture of the washcloth against shoulders. Toss in characterization that I feel does justice to both of these amazing, complex, complicated characters and I'm happily floating around the room again. ^_~ (Tezuka/Fuji, NC-17 content.)
- One Piece - When I Close My Eyes by Archica - I admit, I probably forgave this story a little for the Nami characterization (especially so early on in her time with the Strawhat Pirates) because I'm such the Luffy/Nami fan, but... at the same time, the writing was very nice and there were so many little touches to the story that I thought were really nicely done. You have to probably be a fan of the pairing to enjoy it the way I did, you probably have to want the couple like I do, and if you do... this was a sweet little fic. Arlong's presence in Nami's life was nicely done, as was the way Luffy interacted and was characterized--the balance between nitwit and surprisingly good instincts and loyal captain/friend was really well-done. Also? The line about Luffy's response about what next and their interaction while she's doing her usual chores to look good were also nicely done. I liked the fic. (Luffy/Nami.)
- Prince of Tennis - J'attends by wintry - Okay, see. I have this thing. For Tezuka/Eiji. I don't know where it comes from, I don't try to justify it, I just know that I kinda like it, no matter if I don't really think it would work, nine times out of ten. However? Then along comes this fic that just... it nails everything it needs to to get them heading in the right direction--Oishi's slow disappearance from Eiji's life, Eiji's personality coming across amazingly well--he's so... himself, especially with the hopping onto the bike rack and the way he falls, the way I can just see the particular twist to his lips and sparkle in his eyes that's kind of forced but told in such a subtle way... and that's what I loved about this fic. It was subtle and clever and sharp and I utterly bought it. It was the kind of writing that a pairing like this needs to be believable and not cliche/parody/cracktastic and, god, I sparkle over the characterization of both. Eiji is perfect. Tezuka is perfect. The writing puts stars in my eyes. The ending was just... I honest-to-god sighed happily. I'm such a dippy fangirl, but I'm a happy one, so you can all just shut up about it. ^_~ Loved, loved this fic. Gorgeous writing. (Some light Tezuka/Eiji.)
- One Piece - Next Exit, Heart by Luz Nocturnal - Sanji/Luffy is one of those pairings that I'm not really sure why I like it, why I'm occasionally attracted to it, just that... something about seeing it in enough J-fanart to get me started thinking on it and feeling it out... it slowly started to work for me. And this fic is really a great way for me to start out with English fic for the two of them (since fanart is so visual, it's easier for me to tolerate, whereas fic is much harder for me to actually vibe with) because it seemed quite in character and the little touches were perfect. Luffy was rather dense/oblivious to the effects he had on Sanji, but it wasn't overboard or parody-ish. And the little details of Luffy's love of food, Sanji's interest in Nami, both were nicely done--food is one of the ways that Sanji and Luffy would almost HAVE to be tied together and it could so easily become cliche, but I didn't think it was here, it WORKED for me. Plus, Luffy licking spilled frosting off Sanji's jacket? Uhh. I'll be over in the corner *__*-ing now, thanks. (Luffy/Sanji.)
- Love Mode - underwater moon by Jennifier D. - I want to make sure to mention a couple of caveats about this story first--I suspect that you'll need to have read the entirety of the series to understand the story, because you learn things about Reiji and Kiichi's relationship in the final volumes that I know I sure as hell couldn't have fathomed in the first eight volumes or so. Also, the story isn't going to be for everyone, because incest is a squicky topic for a lot of people, even if it's in the series itself. But what I love about this story is that... it hurts me in the same way that Reiji and Kiichi's relationship in the series hurts me, because it's so complicated and not easy to sum up so simply, because it doesn't make things any easier, because it doesn't just fling them together and give them a happy ending, because they found those happy endings with other people and yet... it's not so simple as that. Because unresolved matters aren't so easily set aside, even years and years later, even after you let other people into your heart, especially when you still love those people. Reiji's feelings for Kiichi here just... they make me ache because he knows, he knows and Kiichi knows that it would be bad, that it's like that underwater moon, that moon reflected on the surface of a pond at night that you occasionally see and want to touch and hold in your hands so badly, but the moment your fingers make contact with it, it all falls apart and they know that and Kiichi will never, ever ask because he knows it would be wrong and Reiji can't do that to Kiichi and just... it's all so lovely and elegant and bittersweet, just like the manga itself. Plus, the final scene? Where Kiichi askes Reiji what he's thinking about and right before he leaves? Shiki's influence in the story? My little fangirl heart aches all over again just thinking about it. I... just... I'm still very, very solidly in the Reiji/Naoya and Haruomi/Kiichi camps, but... this fic makes my heart long for these two as well. I can't express how much I adored it and want to cry over it. ;__; (Reiji/Kiichi, potentially vaguely spoilerish?)
- Prince of Tennis/Harukanaru Toki no Nakade - UN [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - This is another site I know I've visited before, but I can't find it on my page of links, so if I wind up rec'ing it twice.... >__> Originally, there was only the one Prince of Tennis illustration (which I can't find now and it was one of my favorites, it was a gorgeous one of Tezuka mid-game) and a fair amount of HaruToki ones (I know I've seen the HaruToki ones because I KNOW I've seen that illustration of Yukitaka with the spirit coming out of his scroll), but when I went back this morning there was an utterly gorgeous one of Yagyuu that I'd never seen before, so I knew I was going to have to babble about the site. The artist has that style that looks... almost more like they're paintings (even if they're still CG) because the colors are just so incredible and smooth. The details are really nice and everything is just... it's all so elegant and beautiful. The HaruToki ones especially just... they're all so lush looking, so rich looking, that I'm in love with the site. (A little Hachiyou/Akane/Karin, but probably more gen than anything.)
- Prince of Tennis/Gundam SEED - Ultimate Powers [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I love it when a site can actually wow me with the shading, colors, and lines, to the point that the art looks professional and makes me mourn that there aren't more of my favorite series presented--I can only find the one FMA illustration as the current top illustration and it's gorgeous enough to make me pine for more. However! This is the artist that does those incredible Tenipuri doujinshi that look damn near like they could have been actual art from the series--her Kamio/Shinji one I see all the time, her Oshitari/Gakuto one I see all the time, her group illustrations are often on the covers of those Love Prince anthologies and I lust after them because they're so beautiful and then her Gundam SEED art is done with the same talent and they're just... damn, they're good. I wish, DEARLY wish, that she had more FMA and Death Note fanart because I'd drool all over myself some more. (Shounen-ai friendly, but no single theme.)
- Harukanaru Toki no Nakade - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - O..OMG... beautiful fanart here, just... stunning. I half think I may have seen this site before, but I can't find it on my list either, so up it goes because even if I HAVE rec'd it before, it deserves another turn. Just... DAMN, this is pretty art. The kind I would shove at people to get them interested in the series, that's how utterly gorgeous it is. I just... I could stare at the perfect lines and perfect colors of this art damn near all day. The artist does... well, hell, I don't even know if I could pick out her favorite, because they're all done with this tremendous skill and... they sort of remind me of the kind of CG art you find in computer games only a bit more fine, a bit more detailed and the colors softend... so it looks somewhere like a cross between that, cel art, and shoujo art, and it's... there are two Yasuaki illustrations on this site that are some of the most gorgeous things ever, especially the one of him in front of the dark tree at night with his hair swirling around him that just... god, I can't even think of how to describe it. There's also a beautiful, beautiful one of Hisui in a field and what is quite possibly the most stunning Akuram illustration I've ever seen. The details of the folds of his clothes and red leaves on his outfit are tremendous. Beautiful, beautiful art. ♥ (No real warnings/pairings.)
- Harukanaru Toki no Nakade - Rain Shrine [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - And this was just a cute, adorable site with some nice art--the artist seems very fond of Eisen/Akane and she uses these really pretty, soft colors that make me really kinda like the art. With a series like this, colors can really make or break the art, so it's good that hers are nicely done and compliment the cute, nice lineart that she has. There are also a bunch of little mini-comics which are always nice and she does the occasional illustration with Yasuaki in it and the further and further you go through the gallery, the tighter and better her art gets. Her Akane is just adorable and I always like it when Akane is drawn cutely and I'm easily won over by illustrations of Yasuaki and Eisen together and, ooh, there's a very nice one of Akuram towards the very beginning of the gallery that I really like a lot. So, all in all, a very fun little site. (Some Eisen/Akane.)
