- Gravitation - Real Love by Loceheri - Oh, I really kinda adored this because... it's so Yuki. Tatsuha going on and on and ON about Sakuma Ryuuichi and how much he loves him and Yuki finally snapping at him to shut up because he doesn't know the first thing about real love. "You want to know about real love, look at Shuichi. I'm always mean to him, I pick on him constantly, and I make him cry. My pet name for him is "punk". I ignore him when I can, ridicule him when I can't, and generally act like I don't give a damn. You think that makes a bit of difference to him? Hell, no. He just keeps coming back for more, and whether I like it or not, THAT is real love." It's that balance between that he does love Shuuichi and still being cranky about it that I so adore. Plus! Eiri and Tatsuha interacting! I love that! XD Good fic, nice characterization, and some sharp dialogue, I was happy. <3 (Yuki/Shuuichi.)
- Harukanaru Toki no Nakade - Mid-night Haiku by gaki - So, gaki and I have been fangirling madly over the HaruToki anime series now that it's finally out and gaki decided to write another Tomomasa/Takamichi fanfic and just... I adore her writing for these characters so much because her style really works with the series and these characters especially, I think. The writing is full of imagery that's just lovely and brings to mind all the right colors and feelings that are needed for a story like this; when gaki talks about the midnight gardens or the brightly colored fish or the fan Tomomasa carries or the books Takamichi reads (those last two were just wonderful for this story ♥), it brings to mind the feel of these characters. She also has a knack for dialogue for the characters, those tones that are... they're polite and elegant, yet you can still feel the intimacy in them. They're sharp and clever, but not too slangy that would feel weird with the characters. And the ending of the story had me in a giant mess of goo because it was beautifully told, the sense of intimacy without having to tell the reader, the way the whole thing just flared to fully realized detail in my head (which is part of what I'm talking about when I say that gaki's style meshes with the series--because there was no part of this story that wasn't pictured in my head just like I was remembering the way an anime scene played out)... I adore that. ♥ (Tomomasa/Takamichi.)
- Love Mode - runaway by Jennifier D. - I just... well, okay. First of all, I'm going to put a spoiler warning on this rec, because it deals with issues brought up in volume 11 that a lot of people in the English speaking fandom haven't read. So skip if you haven't read them and don't want to be spoiled, even a little bit? I've been having discussions with Jenn-san over the Love Mode series and we're both particularily fascinated by Reiji and Kiichi's relationship, because it's such a complex thing, because there was so little resolution, and because it's the kind that just does it for us. But sometimes it's hard for me to look at the characters and go, "....argh, why don't you just grab Kiichi and run, idiot?" And that's what I liked so much about this fic, because it illustrates what's going on between Reiji and Kiichi at the time, why they're pulling away, why Reiji is running away, why Kiichi lets him go, explains what's happening so that I understand it. One of the things I love so much is that the fic really just sort of nails Shimizu-sensei's style for me, that I have trouble telling what's straight out of the manga and what's made up for this story, because the vibe of it matches the original story so damned well for me. Plus, Jesus Christ, it breaks my heart, despite knowing, KNOWING that they find happiness and peace later in their lives. Just like the manga did. ;_____; But it's lovely and conveys so much of what I could never say half as eloquently about Reiji and Kiichi's relationship. (Reiji/Kiichi, some spoilers if you haven't read the final volume of the series.)
- Prince of Tennis/Koko wa Greenwood - A Tale of Two Tezukas (part 02) by Aishuu - Oh, sure, I've rec'd the first part of this already (at least I think I have?), but I have to rec the second because... hell, this is quite possibly, hands down my favorite crossover, like, EVER. Aishuu's writing style and sense of humor are perfect for it, because she has a sharp clarity to her writing that's necessary to draw the two series together and feel like them both, that delightfully off-the-wall insanity that's not exactly similiar in both series, but she makes it work here. It feels like an anime crossover between the two would. And, oh, god, is it hysterically funny. Her characterizations of Nagisa and Shinobu and Mituru are pitch-perfect. Her characterizations of Tezuka and Fuji and Ryoma are spot-on and just so damned clever. There was no scene in this chapter that I wasn't utterly thrilled by--right from Nagisa's plotting to Fuji's machinations to Mitsuru's plight to Tezuka's conversation with Shinobu (which is, like, the funniest and most perfect thing I've read in a long time) to the kidnapping scene, it was all the good stuff. Once again, much, much love for Aishuu. ♥ (No warnings/pairings, not really.)
Add to this that she's both a Lina/Zel and Xellos/Zelgadiss fan and I am delighted because those are my two favorite pairings. And she characterizes them fantastically in her art, draws all these stunning details and situations and just... god, she's so clearly on a professional level and drawing for these characters that I adore so much that I just... I flail at the whole site. There are some new ones that I'd never seen before--a Xellos/Zelgadiss underwater piece that is GORGEOUS, a Zelgadiss by a campfire practicing with his sword that is GORGEOUS, a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL one of Lina running towards Zelgadiss, and EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE MORE NEW COMICS THAT ARE BEAUTIFUL. Also! Be sure to check out her site for the oekaki comics she's been doing recently (in the fan manga section)--there's "The Cave of Crimson Heart" which has some of the BEST Xellos/Zelgadiss interaction that's just... I about died from amusement because that's SUCH a Xellos-like thing to do. And there's the "Phoenix Fairy Tale" which is just... holy crap, it's beautiful, the costumes of the characters are stunning, the story is intriguing, and just... I wouldn't have thought I'd be so sucked into an oekaki thing, but I LOVE it. Just... after going through her art, I feel like I'm floating happily on clouds afterwards, because it's so beautiful and just so... amazingly characterized, too. LOVE. (A lot of gen, a lot of Lina/Zel, and a fair amount of Xellos/Zelgadiss.)
- Slayers - [ English Fanart Site ] - I... kinda fell for this site because of the really cute fanart of Zelgadiss and Xellos and I tend to really be attracted to those two characters. I like her lines and colors and she really does well drawing the characters' hair and then there's this really neat one of Zelgadiss that's hard to describe, but... is a really neat style--the one of him with his hair all windblown (okay, yes, it's wire, but it really works for the image, so be quiet) and a couple of nice ones of Lina and just... I enjoyed her collection of art. <3 Plus, OMG, her favorites page is keeping me busy for days. >____> (Maybe a little Xellos/Zelgadiss, but mostly gen, I think.)
- Slayers - [ English Fanart Site ] - I swear, I keep coming back to this gallery and finding illustrations that I hadn't seen before even when I swore I'd been through the whole thing. The first one to catch my eye is the artist's featured illustration, "the long dark" one of Xellos and the other Mazoku I forget the name of, the one with the beautiful colors and lines. Then I happened to catch site of the illustration of Filia in a long, dark burgundy dress that looked GREAT on her. And then I started seeing the occasional illustrations of Xellos and Zelgadiss. And then I started really having fun with the galleries; there's a lot of art in them and a really nice selection of different characters and some REALLY nice, fun AU stuff that intrigues me (Slayers in college! XD), and there's an awesome one of Xellos titled "Servant of the Great Beast" that's totally worth going for alone. Oh, and the Slayers/Empire Records fusion is GREAT. Beautiful, even. XD Oh! Oh! And the "Maiden of Volabazard" Filia illustration? Nice. Just... lots of cute, silly fun here and then some illustrations that make me sparkle. (Some Xellos/Filia, some Zelgadiss/Xellos, a good lot of gen, too.)

...And I haven't looked at Slayers fanart in AGES. Nice stuff you found there. :D

Date: 2004-10-28 11:04 am (UTC)Slayers is a fandom that I have tremendous love for, but it's either so old or so set in its ways by now, that not much really clicks with me anymore. (Plus, I like Xellos/Zelgadiss and, WOW, is there a lot of
crapstories out there that don't mesh with my view of the series and characters. Lina/Zel is slightly easier to find good stuff for, but there's a lot of mediocre stuff there, too.) However, Eugene's art will always be my favorite, her art is utterly amazing and I can't praise it highly enough. (Obviously, eh? :D)
