- Viewfinder - untitled, part 1 by ingenius_inc - You know, the idea of a fic about Akihito going to see Asami, running into a woman who smells like him, freezing over what that means, then, not really understanding his own reaction to it, running off to another country to report on the war that's broken out to report for his station and getting captured should have been such a weird, jarring thing to read for Viewfinder. But it wasn't, somehow it worked, keeping Akihito's hotheadedness, combined with that he gets himself into more trouble than he should, but he can still mostly take care of himself (...mostly) and the way he thinks/feels about Asami, the hate mixed with the attraction that even he himself doesn't understand, is beautifully done. The intensity of the whole thing is fantastic, it feels like it could have taken place in the Viewfinder storyline and, oh, the ending. The evil, evil ending that makes me pine for the next part of this one. *__* (Asami/Akihito.)
- Naruto - Unhealthy Obsession by Haruno - So, I saw the pairing of this fic (Iruka/Anko) and was intrigued, hoping to find something halfway decent that may have fit the characters at least a little bit. Instead, what I got was something that was surprisingly insightful for both characters, Iruka's genuineness and forgiving nature, Anko's lack of innocence for a long time, but nothing that was so harsh or awful, it was almost... something almost sweet without being fluffy. Okay, that's a terrible description, but... well, this is what utterly won me over: She's always gotten what she wanted before - Her innocence had been lost long before she'd ever made chuunin. Her hand roamed to her neck and she winced at the memories. The village, they'd never forgiven her. He would, though, that was how he was. Surprisingly lovely Iruka/Anko, I'd love to see more from this author. (Iruka/Anko.)
- Cardcaptor Sakura - one thousand and one nights by Bethany Ten - From the looks of it, she would remain twenty-something forever, and he discerned this not from the flare of moon magic that cradled her like the arms of Somnus, but from the twinkle in her pale-pale eyes, like a star that flares brightest just a hairsbreadth from dying. She walked on the air and drew patterns in the cloudless sky. I was immediately pulled into this story for the beautiful, beautiful imagery the author weaves, the kind that fits with the CCS manga beautifully because it's all these beautiful, sweeping lines and soft colors and elegant movements that this pairing really calls for, in my view. It's not just that the author writes a lovely image, it's that the writing itself compliments the descriptions, it's soft and pretty, evoking a tone that feels right for Eriol and Kaho. Plus, I just... I felt the magic between them, corny as that sounds, both in the sense of their power and the chemistry between them. I thought this was befitting CLAMP in general and these two in particular. *coos* So pretty~ *__* (Eriol/Kaho.)
- Cardcaptor Sakura - Chocolate Cake by rara avis - I was a little wary of this fic at first, given that the concept is basically Yukito on a sugar high after eating an overly-sugar-fied chocolate cake that Sakura made, but... the author really did well with the concept, including all these little bits and notes (why he ate the cake, what he would have rather done with it, that Other Voice in his head that isn't entirely happy with the situation, Sakura's Very Important Talk with Yukito, and the Use of Capital Letters to denote Special Things really did Crack Me Up) and just got across the sense of fun and genuinely funny humor that I was swept up in and enjoyed it the entire way through. Plus, Yukito is Way Too Cute when he's Thinking In Capital Letters. Hee. <3 (Touya/Yukito.)
- Bleach - Looking Back by Celeste - So the guilt's starting to wear off, the more and more I read this pairing by authors who do this type pairing well, you know? Which I consider a good thing, because it means I've got more fic to read these days and that I get fic like this that alternately makes me roll around on the floor laughing (Oh, god, Isshin is so perfect here, just absolutely insane and in character.) and being quietly touched by what it means to both characters that Ishida is slowly being brought into the Kurosaki family, that there are people around him now. But what I loved is that it swung between the two tones much like the manga itself does, it feels natural rather than schizophrenic, the two moods deftly winding together. One minute they're laughing over Ichigo's baby pictures, the next you get a glimpse of Ishida's life aside from the crack bits you see at school or around others. That works, the segue from one to the other. ♥ Well, that and Isshin and the rest of the Kurosaki family--'cause the first line of this story is BRILLIANT. If you're not rolling around on the floor and laughing at that, there's just something wrong with you. ^_~ (Ichigo/Ishida.)
- Eyeshield 21 - Surprises (and omake!) by Vikki - Vikki is a genius. Hiruma/Sena fic that works and is really just brilliant because it's so... Hiruma and Sena. Right from the beginning, I can buy this because it fits together with how Hiruma treats Sena, how I can't imagine it any other way, how Hiruma sends these hilarious mixed signals to poor Sena, the hints you get of his home life and just... it all fits together in a fic that would have been genius just for Eyeshield 21 fic, much less for making the Hiruma/Sena pairing work. It's that balance between pure batshit insanity and something that's a little bit deeper, much like the ES21 series itself is. *dances with glee* And the end! *shimmers with delight* Of course, just when I thought I could not love her more and then Vikki goes and writes the omake which is just as brilliant, this time about what kind of person Hiruma's dad is. A lot of times, when authors guess at things we've been given little clue about, it doesn't quite ring true for me, but this? Oh, this I can absolutely BELIEVE. And laugh over. Which, really, you can't have ES21 fic without the hysterical laughter. (Hiruma/Sena. ♥)
- Fullmetal Alchemist - Outlet by Vikki - Bwah. I <3 Vikki's FMA fic, like, tons and tons. I loved her when she started out and she's gotten to be just awesome these days, right down to the way Roy uses the Fullmetal name because (at this point) he can't remember Ed's name, yet none of that shows. Plus, eeeee! Ed's characterization! Such a smart kid, yet still so... provokable in so, so many ways. Oh, and the end, especially Roy's second to last line. Lovely. This fic deserves better than this rec, but (No warnings/pairings.)
- Fullmetal Alchemist - Ugly and Not Exactly Pity by Harukami - Ugly: [Note: There is a spoiler warning for ep25 on this one.] I have no idea how Harukami manages it, but she's one of the very few authors I would read an Archer/Ross fic for because I know she can do brilliant, amazing things with these kinds of rare pairings and this one is no exception. The sheer... *waves hands* I don't know what to call it, but it struck me in the heart the same way the series itself did, something weighty and powerful, if not terribly obvious about it. That's the best way I can describe it and I know it doesn't make sense outside of my own head. Just... wow, it works. Go read. The last couple of lines pack a hell of a punch.
Not Exactly Pity: And then! And then! And then she writes Havoc/Hawkeye that's just wonderful, the way they're both so... human here, the way they both want this, but are both a little unsure and hesitant, but it manages to work. Havoc is a wonderful character, how anyone could not love him is beyond me, and this fic shows why, without having to tell us anything, it shows it. And Hawkeye is a gorgeous, wonderful woman, cool and professional when needed, warm and very human when needed and this fic shows that, too. And, god, I could not love the Havoc/Hawkeye here more, especially that it doesn't take shortcuts, for all that it's short. It doesn't forget who and what they are, but still works. *happy fangirl sigh* (Archer/Ross in the first one, Havoc/Hawkeye in the second.)
- One Piece - And Eat It Too by Sherry Marie - You know how there are fics that come along just at the right time to pull you back into something you love, the kind that catch you in just the right frame of mind and make you laugh? Well, I've been sliding back towards this series again lately and this fic was posted yesterday and was just funny enough, just snarky enough, just faintly... *waves hands* well, what do you call Zoro/Sanji fic where Zoro "bakes" a cake for Sanji's belated birthday, but they still bitch and scream at each other about it? Certainly not sweet. Whatever it is, there are some hilarious lines in the fic, the kind that just cracked me up (many of the commentors picked up on the line that made me laugh the most, too XD); this being the kind that's just... FUN. I also completely believe Zoro would be that terrible at "baking" something. <3<3<3 (Zoro/Sanji.)
- Mirage of Blaze - A Stone's Throw by Cerise Tennyo - Oh, this was a lovely piece set during the first episode, the first time Naoe sees Takaya/Kagetora again, before he understands that he doesn't have all his old memories and the atmosphere of it is just... so intense and painfully Naoe here. The duality between his hate and attraction to Kagetora, that it's nothing so simple, the power over him that Kagetora has, the way he can affect Naoe like no other. The writing is lovely and just... gah, I really could fall completely for this series with more fic like this, I think. (A little bit Naoe/Kagetora.)

Date: 2005-03-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(But yeah, I remember how Brad saw FMA (subbed) for, like, just the first time a month or two ago, and ep 25 hit him so, SO hard, so I keep rememberng the impact it had on me and not wanting to 'ruin' that for other people. Of course, I *knew*, but it still had impact. XD)
And eee, thanks. :) Two more posted, and now I think I am going to stop and actually eat something. Fic -- it's deadly in large doses! XD At least for the author. XD XD

Date: 2005-03-12 09:32 pm (UTC)*coughs* Anyway, yeah. I knew ahead of time, because I'd heard manga spoilers and I'd seen enough fanart that hinted at it that I picked up on what was probably gonna happen, yet I still got attached and was just as affected when it happened. It's interesting to note, though, that people still warn for the endings of a lot of series (some people still warn for the Bebop ending, even!) but something like FMA ep25, people seem to completely forget after a year or so.
EEEEEE. YOU WROTE MARUMA FIC! GWENDAL AND GUNTHER EVEN! *skips gleefully off* *___*

Date: 2005-03-12 09:55 pm (UTC)I'm not sure what to do, but I THINK I SHOULD. XD
[noooods] Maybe because it's midway through a series, so people think 'real fans' should have seen that far so far, but... everyone needs to start sometimes. XD I dunno.
[laughs] About four or five maruma fic by now, in fact. XD KKM is a cute series, omg. XD XD <33

Date: 2005-03-12 11:36 pm (UTC)So, instead, my suggestion is 30-second summaries of your fics perhaps? It'd be a big project and so I would totally understand not doing it, but that's my suggestion for now! *skips off* ^_~
I suspect it's because most people probably assume that if you're a fan of a series and seeking out fic for it, you'll at least have gotten halfway into it? But you might not have gotten all the way to the end, so people still keep those in mind?
MaruMa needs a bigger fandom, omg, insert whining here. It also really needs to be April, like, RIGHT NOW. (Also, I read and will comment when I pick myself up off the floor, when I am currently in a pile giggling after reading the latest two of yours.)

Date: 2005-03-12 11:50 pm (UTC)[nods] That's probably true. Of course, it's one of those fictional divides that doesn't necessarially exist, as I expect a lot of people are filling up their 'in the meantime' for wating for the next, say, dub ep with fic, or for the next DVD likewise, but it is the type of thing one would *assume*.
[giggles] Awwww, is the KKM fandom small? (And [giggles] Thanks. :) Don't want you to feel obliged, but I always do enjoy your comments. ^^)

Date: 2005-03-13 12:41 am (UTC)That's also true--which makes me wonder if there's much of an effect on fandom now that it's becoming more and more routine for a series to have been fansubbed before it hits English-speaking shores officially, so that there's already a much larger fandom that's already seen the whole thing. (Aside from the sub vs dub war, which actually seems less acute than it did Back In The Day, since now everyone has their options available to them and dubs are getting much better.)
*considers* I think the MaruMa fandom is pretty small, it doesn't seem like much fic or art gets posted or that there's much discussion these days. But, of course, it seems even smaller when you're a Konrad/Yuuri and/or Gwendal/Guther fan, neither of which get written much. *mock scowling at the fandom* (*sparkles* One of the good things about scaling back the whole journal thing is that I actually have the energy to comment a little more than I used to, there's not that same crush of a billion comments waiting to be answered. ....god, I'm such a whiner about that. XD)
