Notes/Babbling: ....I didn't think I'd read this much. Wow. *blinks* (Though, I've been trying to hunt down some of my old Highlander favorites to rec, so that helped.)
Series:
DCU - 6 Fanfics
That '70s Show - 1 Fanfic
Highlander - 2 Fanfics
Ranma 1/2 - 1 Fanfic
- DCU/Justice League - Escape Artistry by David Hines - I had high hopes for this story when I sat down to read it, because the author seemed to be writing things I was interested in, his FFNET bio was funny, and from what little I could tell, he seemed to be well-received in the fic community. I had no idea just HOW much I would enjoy this story, because... dammit, THIS is what I'd been pining away for. A story that had Bruce/Diana tension and UST in it, but had a PLOT in it as well. Oh, god, DCU-plot just makes me shiver with geeky hapiness, it really does. Not only that? Character insight! Fantastic writing! BEAUTIFULLY hysterical one-liners! God, there were scenes in the story that literally had me having to stop just so I could laugh with how funny the writing was; the author's comedic timing is grand. And, jeez, Bruce and Diana were just perfect, all their complexities and layers to both of them. And! And! It was woven into the plot! How often do you get that? AND action scenes? Squee, yo. But it was more than that, it was just... such a cohesive whole that it deserves a far better rec than this, but I'm still fangirling over getting Bruce/Diana AND an honest-to-god plot that could have come straight out of the series itself. And, oh, man, Wally. He gets the best lines in this, he really does. ....yes, this rec deserved all those italics. >:P (Bruce/Diana.)
- DCU/Batman - Jason and Me by David Hines - This was... honestly? I expected to not care for this fic because Stephanie and Jason are two of my least favorite DCU characters (except for the seething hatred I have of Aquaman and John Steward!Green Lantern) and I'm reeeeeeeeally not crazy about the idea of Stephanie as Robin, but... damn, this is one of those stories that just knocks a person on their ass and doesn't let go of you until the end. THIS is the kind of Stephanie that I could be interested in, THIS is the kind of story that makes Bruce's decision make a little more sense. The writing is incredible, the characterization just... awesome. I rarely use that word, but it fits here. Stephanie's trip to see and talk to each of the Bat-clan members to understand a little more about Jason Todd was just incredibly done, each of their takes on the situation, each of their reactions to her being in the costume now... it was a gorgeous, multi-faceted story that nailed me to my seat and wouldn't let me get up until it was done. ....dammit. (Canon pairings, so not the point of the story.)
- DCU/Batman - Measured Out in Coffee Spoons by David Hines - .....Jesus. Every once in awhile there's a story that comes along that's not... it's not the kind that makes me want to cry or makes my heart hurt so much as it leaves me feeling like I've had the wind knocked out of my lungs with a two-by-four. The entire time I was reading this, I was just... entranced by it in that way that I just COULD NOT look away from it. And the ending... this was truly deserving of the word masterpiece, I think, because I've read so few fics that can shake me as much as this fic shook me. The writing is beautiful, the characterization and little details are just amazing. Everything was absolutely perfect, I'm just... awestruck right now. I say no more because I refuse to spoil, but this is a MUST READ, I think. (No warnings/pairings.)
- DCU/Batman - New Year's Kiss by David Hines - You know, by the time I'd read this fic, it was about the fourth of the author's I'd read and you'd think I'd have learned to expect that whole having-the-wind-knocked-from-my-lungs feeling while reading the fics, but I expected fluff here... and got some of that (beautiful, beautiful fluff, though), but also got a story of Cass and Alfred finding common ground that neither wished they had. The writing was just... nothing was touched on too long, the premise wasn't over-stretched or too graphic, that would have been OOC for these characters, I think. Instead, their troubled pasts were only touched on just enough to get the point across and that was so them and so heart-rending for both of them and just... dammit, this fic was incredible. Fantastically written and the kind of character insight/portrait fic I DREAM of writing. Just... powerful is the word I think I'm looking for. (A very light content warning.)
- That '70s Show - No Less Than I Deserve by Black Queen - I think the thing that sells me on this fic... is that the author really nailed Hyde's speech patterns. Which sounds like a silly thing to focus on, I imagine, but when an author can manage to be insightful with a character AND frame it in words that the character would say (as opposed to the author herself), I sparkle madly. I'm a little hesitant on the amount of self-introspection Hyde does in this fic, but I believe all of what he says/thinks, so it's not really a criticism--the author really got inside his head and did a fantastic job with the character, never stepping over the line of overly dramatic, which would be bizarre with a character like Hyde. No, he still had that edge of cynicism and sarcasm, even when he was being serious. The writing is smooth and very readable, which is a HUGE plus in the That '70s Show fandom, and, honestly? It makes me really wish that the author wrote more for the series because her style really fits with the show. *pouts* (Hyde/Jackie.)
- DCU/Batman - The Last Temptation of Alfred by David Hines - *wipes away tears* This was beautiful. Truly. Just... wow. The first half of the fic, while Alfred is at a Butlering Convention, is very amusing, but it's the last two scenes that had my abs hurting from trying to restrain my giggles so I didn't look like a loon laughing at the computer screen. ^_~ This was... HEE! One of those perfect executions of comedic timing and not stretching a concept beyond its limits. Also? So much with Teh Funneh. It was just... man, it was perfectly timed and the jokes were brilliant and the kind of story that's not one zinger after the next, but instead a scene where... *waves hands* it's just... everything is built up just right. Plus! It has Alfred in it! As the main character! That does not happen often enough. And, god, when Dick and Tim lost it, so did I. XDXDXD (No warnings/pairings.)
- DCU/Justice League - Wonder Woman and Batman Spend Some Time in the Real World by Josephine - This is one of those fics that I read a long, long time ago, back when I was first still teetering on whether or not I liked the Bruce/Diana pairing, especially because there wasn't much well-written stuff out there. And the story does have a bizarre concept (Batman and Wonder Woman are accidentally transported to the "real world" until they find a way back to their own), but it actually really worked, I thought. Their dillemma of helping people or not (they want to, but they're not going to be around forever and this isn't their world, they can't let themselves be superheroes here) was nicely done, very touching and rather poignant. It's one of those stories that I just... I have really fond memories of and I thought was an interesting character study (given how Bruce and Diana differ on things, how they disagree, yet still showing why they work so well together and pull through together *sparkles*) and was one that helped win me over to the pairing with the pretty writing, so I wanted to put it on the recs page. (A little bit Batman/Wonder Woman.)
- Highlander - Seeds and You Don't Know Me by Sandra McDonald - You know how there are those fics that you can just REMEMBER even five years after you read them? The concept that still haunts you because the author did such an incredible job with the story and you just CLICKED with the story premise? This is one of those fics for me. Sandra McDonald was one of those Highlander writers that I would have read just about anything of hers because 1) she wrote the characters/time period that was my favorite and 2) her writing was excellent. This story... I continue to just be... so damned impressed with how this WORKS in the series, how easily I can BELIEVE this theory, and just... dammit, I LOVE THIS FIC. I love the ideas it set forth (I'm doing my damndest not to spoil it, too >_o), not just the larger concept about Immortals, but about the specific Highlander characters (especially my darling Richie) and I LOVE the way the author handled it. If there were ever more of this fic universe, I would run back to the Highlander fandom in a heartbeat. Seriously. (No real warnings/pairings.)
- Highlander - Chicken Eggs and Ham by Sandra McDonald - Speakin of stories that stay with you for ages and ages after you've read them, this is another of those. One of the things that Sandra McDonald did best was the dynamic between Duncan, Tessa, and Richie from the first season that got me so hooked on the series in the first place. I love certain things about the later seasons (Methos and Joe, largely), but, man, the first season was my season, the one I always go back to. And this story capitolized on the dynamics wonderfully, just... eeeeee! Even as I try to write this rec, I'm rereading the story and practically bouncing in my chair and just how... THEM the characters are; the characterization is so tight that I just glee over it. Plus, I have a real weak spot for the whole Duncan - Richie interaction thing, especially when they're off in the woods and Richie is sick and, eeeeee!, this fic just does it so well. One of the classics from my time in the Highlander fandom, I think. (No warnings/pairings.)
- Ranma 1/2 - Ninjoubanashi - Thicker Than Water (And Much Tastier) by Eric Hallstrom - I admit, I went looking for Ranma/Shampoo fics this morning because... well, as much as I love Ranma/Akane, I am a Ranma fangirl first and foremost and since I've started reading the manga (as opposed to watching random episodes of the anime), I've grown to be a lot more fond of Shampoo, so I wanted to see how a fic with them would be done. And... to be honest, I found this fic kind of working for me (even if Ranma was pretty much only in the background for most of it), the concept was clever, the execution interesting, Shampoo was VERY well-done and it was one of those stories that was just enough... that I kind of want more of these two characters. .....dammit. ~_~ (Ranma/Shampoo.)
