Notes: I have now watched Gurren Lagann 8-11 and I just... I-- Quit breaking my heart, stupid show! ;___;
Series:
Bleach - 5 Fanfics
Burn Notice - 1 Fanfic
Psych - 1 Fanfic
Gurren Lagann - 5 Fanart
Tales of the Abyss - 6 Fanart
- Bleach - Fever by Katsu - I really liked this story, it was kind of a simple little story, one set back when Renji and Rukia were kids, trying to find a way to survive on the streets of Rukongai, when Rukia gets a fever. But the joy of the fic is in all the little details loaded into the writing, the way Renji views all of the rest of their gang, the way he views Rukia, the way he's so rough around the edges, but still obviously cares a lot. It's not a nice world that they're growing up in here, they know way too much for kids their ages, but the author doesn't infodump that too much, it's just part of the way Renji views the world now. Add to that a sweet scene as he watches over a feverish Rukia and it's a really lovely little fic. (Renji/Rukia implied.)
- Bleach - One Last Declaration by libekory - I think there may have been a point where I laced my fingers together and kind of held them to my chest a little because I adored this fic so much, because it was so much of what this pairing should be. Ichigo's surprising amount of awkwardness, Orihime's delightful oddities, the sweetness of the two of them together, the adorable dorkery, all of it was lovely in this fic where Ichigo takes Orihime to meet someone important. The little touches of how Ichigo views everything and how he thinks, how he reacts to Orihime, whom you can tell is babbling nervously, though it still never quite occurs to Ichigo (of course it wouldn't ♥), all of it made for a wonderful, lovely fic that got my fangirl heart to turn over with love. (Ichigo/Orihime.)
- Bleach - Late Night Encounters by kay_willow - One of the things I like most about this fic is the way it includes the Hollow part of Ichigo in the Ichigo/Orihime relationship, the way this pairing isn't all sweetness and light, there's something a bit darker lurking under the surface. The way Orihime deals with waking up to Hollow!Ichigo standing near the window, the way he reacts to her in turn, is fantastic, because Orihime isn't a weak sort of person, even if she is incredibly gentle. There was a sort of lethal grace to Hollow!Ichigo as well, something very predatory and smart in the way he acted and talked about Ichigo, a sense of maybe something appreciative for Orihime as well. All the little touches, both touching and utterly dorktastic, make this a fantastic fic. (Ichigo/Orihime.)
- Bleach - Twenty Things that you probably don't know about Kurosaki Ichigo and Inoue Orihime by flash_indie - I really do like these whole 20 Things stories, they're a way to create a much larger picture than you could normally do with the same amount of words and sometimes some really neat, creative things come out of them. And then sometimes you get fics like this that are just lovely for the way they span over the characters' lifetimes, showing how they live their lives, how they fell in love, before they fell in love, how they spent their life together, how everyone else reacted to them. And I loved that about this fic, that all the people in their lives had an impact on the story, they were all important and meaningful. The characterization is spot on and I read this entire story in one sitting, while usually my attention span wanders off when I try to read fic these days. Just. Yes. This is what I want out of fandom. (Ichigo/Orihime.)
- Bleach - Monster on the Outside by kay_willow - As I mentioned in a rec up above, one of the things I like about the Ichigo/Orihime fic that's coming out these days is that it deals with the more complicated, more painful things that would come up in their relationship, especially with Hollow!Ichigo. This is a short scene after the fight with Grimmjow, a way it might possibly go, with Orihime stumbling a little and Ichigo all twisted up inside because he's an emotional retard so much of the time, and it's so them. I love that he doesn't blame her for being scared at first, I love her for working to get past the fear, because that's what's important, not just blindly accepting whatever, and the author does a fantastic job at getting you to feel the emotions right along with the characters. (Ichigo/Orihime.)
- Burn Notice - Something on the Books by Laura Smith - I was journalhopping and stumbled over a recs post that mentioned a Burn Notice fic, which I was intrigued by, especially since it was gen. I don't mind the canon, but I'm not sure they're in the right place for it, so this being a genfic intrigued me. And it's a really fantastic, genuinely creepy look into what Michael's childhood might have been like, what would make him into the person he is today, set in a narrative that made it almost impossible for me not to hear Jeffrey Donovan's voice in my head. It's insightful, it shows how he may have become who he is and why being stuck in Miami is so torturous for him, all wrapped up in short flashes of scenes. An excellent read. (No warnings/pairings.)
- Psych - A Lovestruck Romeo Sings an Awkward Serenade by jesshelga - Amanda gave me the link for this fic and I've said this a few times before, but it's still true--I don't particularly feel the need to ship much of anything in Psych, but if I were going to? It would be Lassiter/Juliet all the way. This fic does an utterly marvelous job of capturing Lassiter's personality, the little way he phrases things and the way he thinks, and I love it. I love it because he's clearly winding himself up way too much and clearly a little off in the head, but it's not over the top, it's exactly the way it's done in the series itself and asdlfkajsdlkjas oh, god, these two would be so adorable together and this fic kind of makes me want to ship them a little more seriously. (As the author's notes say: Lassiter/O’Hara, Lassiter/Crazy.)
- Gurren Lagann - ETN2 [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It's way, way too early for me to be looking at Gurren Lagann fanart sites, I only just finished episode 7 at the time I went looking at this site. But I'd stumbled over a few links and I was familiar enough with the series that I at least wanted to give it a shot. And this artist has a really kinda neat style, almost sort of rough around the edges, but too detailed for that exactly. It's a really interesting mix with the Gurren Lagann style, I wound up liking it a lot. And I waffle back and forth between Kamina/Simon and Kamina/Yoko, so I'm not at all opposed to being won over with fanart. XD (Some Kamina/Simon, a little other, a little gen.)
- Gurren Lagann - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Okay. I was already kind of loving this site for the pretty art and the Kamina/Yoko (which I suspect will be somewhat of a rarity?), but then there was a series of illustrations with the Gurren Lagann characters dressed up as the Shin Seiki Evangelion characters and I was in love. I mean. Kamina as Rei. I was laughing kind of a lot. Though, not as much as I was at Viral as Asuka. Just. a sd;flkjasldkj yes. The rest of the site is very nice, it's scribbly styled with brushes of a watercolor style, which I like on this site. (Kamina/Yoko, maybe a little Simon/Nia, maybe a little other, some gen, too.)
- Gurren Lagann - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - You'll have to dig around a little on this site to find all of the art, it's scattered across a lot of different blog entries, but since I'm really craving art for the series, I didn't find it that much effort to go through. And I like what the artist does with her illustrations, they're often cute little scribbles or solid little pieces of character stand-alone art or adorable group shots. It's a solid, fun site for when I'm on a hunt for more, more, more art. (Nothing I'm really going to warn for.)
- Gurren Lagann - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I went back and forth on this site a lot, but just about every time I was ready to stop going through the diary board and leave the site, there would be one more sketch that caught my eye and made me keep going for just a little while longer. I actually found it easier just to go through the artist's diary board instead of poking through the galleries and, I admit, the art's not going to be for everyone, it's very T&A fanservice friendly in places, but... if you don't mind that, there are a lot of really cute sketches tucked away on various pages, too. Enough so that I wound up going through nearly every page of the board by the time I was done. (There's some not-safe-for-work content here.)
- Gurren Lagann - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, man, I love the colors on this site, they're so bright and colorful and vivid and fantastic. There's some really hot art on the site, the further you get into the gallery, the more the artist improves and she can do some really kickass group illustrations. Her Yoko looks so great... hell, all of them look fantastic, there's this one of Yoko and Nia that's just so smooth and professional looking... and then there's any time the artist does these really great CG-style looking images of Yoko, Kamina, and Simon together that just make me happy all over, I love that trio. ;__;♥ And, actually, it seems like there are two artists on this site, the other one who does some adorable chibis and some other really cute art. <3 (No real warnings/pairings.)
- Tales of the Abyss - BEAST-SIDE [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Jade/Luke isn't a pairing I gave a lot of thought (though, I can see where the potential came from in the game) and I even started out with the sketches on this page (working my way backwards instead of forwards) but I was immediately taken with how beautiful the sketches were. The lines are soft and elegant and make the characters look utterly fantastic. Everything is about these long limbs and soft clothes and intimate poses and it just works. As for the regular art, it's even more gorgeous, full of the same lovely lines and now even prettier, soft, warm colors. And, yes, the majority of the site is Jade/Luke, but every so often the artist does Asch+Luke or a group image or one of Peony in formal clothing and they're so great. I loved the site a lot. (Jade/Luke, some Asch+Luke gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - For once, I'm actually not all that fond of the oekaki on this site, I don't think. You can see the artist certainly has talent and a lot of potential, but it's in her gallery proper stuff that you can really see how pretty her drawings are. (Well, there's a difference between the oekaki and the sketches. The sketches are lovely and I enjoyed going through all of them.) They've got very nice, fine lines and soft, warm colors and a very light, airy feel that has a polished sort of feel, rather than feeling unfinished. I especially love the way the artist draws Luke's hair, it looks so vivid and yet soft, the colors practically glow. Her Asch is pretty damn gorgeous as well... hell, all of the galleries were a delight to go through. *__* (A lot of gen, maybe a smidge of Asch/Luke.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It took me a little while to get into this site properly, some of the earlier images weren't to my tastes, but there were enough cute images that I kept at it for a little while. Somewhere along the line, I started genuinely enjoying the illustrations, the artist's take on Synch and Ion are really adorable, very cute and she uses the pastel colors associated with them very well. Not that she only does those characters--there's also a lovely one of Arietta, a beautiful one of Asch, etc.--but for the most part, it's about Sync, Ion, and the rest. A nice little site that I liked. (No real warnings/pairings.)
- Tales of the Abyss 1or8 [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It took me a little while to find the art on this site, but it was so very worth the effort, the light pastels, the watercolor-like style, the beautiful lines, all of it makes for some gorgeous fanart. When the artist does everything absolutely right, she creates these light, airy images that are just full of these almost-glowing colors and it's sites like this that keep me going back to the Tales of the Abyss fandom over and over. Or even revisiting sites and staring at all the art, since I feel like I may have been to this one before. (Too much fanart will rot your brain after awhile. orz) But, even if I have been here before, it's worth a revisit, even the sketches are very cute and, when the artist adds in a little color, they're really lovely to look at. ♥ (A little Jade/Luke, but it's mostly a gen site.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - The thing that this site has going for it and what ultimately won me over, I suspect, is that the colors are just so bright and vivid, the reds of Asch's and Luke's hair just shines right off the screen. I'm weak to that sort of thing. And not everything on the site is perfect, but there are a handful of illustrations that are just lovely--Tear in a field, Asch kissing Luke's face, Luke with a bird perched on his shoulder--and make the site totally worth visiting if you're into fanart. Or, you know. Maybe I just have a weakness for the two of them in uniform. >_><3 (Some gen, some Asch/Luke.)
- Tales of the Abyss - Sleeps [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, god, the adorableness of Guy and little kidlet Luke on this site is practically lethal. The art is that kind I tend to be weak towards, the soft pastels and light, airy feel, then combined with kidlets. The older stuff is just as nice, though, with the same soft colors and surprising amount of detail when you look closely at them. Her Luke is especially cute, you can tell how much of a fondness for him the artist has. And, hey, it's nice to see a Guy/Luke site every once in awhile. <3 (Guy/Luke, some not-safe-for-work content if you keep poking around long enough.)
